Max wire parameter problem

I am trying to animate a knob with a wire parameter connected slider. Everything works fine as it stays flat, but once I rotate the knob, the slider can only spin the knob accord to the world axis. (thus the knob would spin off center). Please give me some tips as to how to solve this problem. I need the knob to spin around its local axis. Thanks in advance.
