I'll try to go for a little more realisim in 3D rather than the comic look. The concept will only help to show me the direction and let me try things on the fly.
@pierre5454: Thank You! Yes he walks on all 4s too, kinda like a gorrilla, but when he's fighting he should be pretty stable on 2 as well, so thank you for the hint, I think I balanced that better now...
@Bummer6: Thanks for the early flowers too ... as said I think the legs are a bit better now (I just scaled them in the concept to remind me of the proportions) ... I'm not so fixed on the concept regarding the armor, It will turn out different in the end anyway because I want some nice details and I'll go for what feels best...
And here is my first sculpting pass on a crappy base as I like it, just to check out proportions and play about a bit:
Now I will take this version and start building a better basemesh and go for the first real sculpting pass... Hands anf feet are crap, I'm leaving them for the next step...
Not too sure If I should make all armor pieces (talking about the "neck" piece in particular here) as seperate subtools, think it might give the whole thing a more consistant feel when all armor parts are seperate?!
rest of the armor is still to come - hand, leg plus shoulder
What do you think about the small skulls running up the spline?
Been strugglin with tons of different armor types, but now I think I've got a nice direction. A kind of bone/rib armor ... still have to define the forms better, but at least I'm happy with him now... not afraid of the time running out, as long as I don't have to relocate again...
cool dude. I think the bone armor is working well.
I think you should however, go back and sculpt a bit more into the forms you have here. Make them more defined, as your sculpt is very soft and flowing right now.
Unless you're going for cartoony, but either way, I think you should cut some of your shapes a bit sharper.
Nice work, it just needs more polish
Thanks mate, yeah I somehow lost a lot of the definition because I went over the thing with rakes, I thought that would help define sharper edges, but it just helps defining the way light flows over the forms...
I'll give the shapes a polish... Thanks for the hint...
Yea I have that problem too with losing definition sometimes. Hehe the smooth brush should be handled with care. I agree with coldkodiak that the bone armor was a slick idea. good work so far, looking forward to more updates.
Yeah, I read about a little trick for the Smooth brush. If you turn down the fade-off curve then it shouldn't kill the form too much... I should have used that...
Lost my job last month, because the company ran out of cash and I still havent got payed.
Had to move back to Munich where I now have no real home, just hopping between spots to stay.
One is my Grandad who lost his eyesight and who's girlfreind Dyed two weeks ago, and it hurts me so much to see him suffer (He's allmost 90).
The other spot is my mom, who is afraid to loose her job, 5 years before she's done working and would get her long deserved pension.
The last was my Girlfreind who just broke up with me, because I might have to relocate again for work and she couldn't take it no more, not to know how long I'm going to stay (trigger might have been some Job offers I have, where I tryed to talk with her about it). Its been a damn hard time for our partnership the last 2 Years because I lived 8 car hours away and a lot of bad things happend to her in that time too.
I had to leave most of my best freinds behind with the last company, so I can't hang out with them now
And my old mates here all have a twisted view on life and seem to have fallen for drugs in the time I've been gone so I don't want to hang out with them anymore.
All in all I somehow can't find the power to finish this right now.
Maybe some of you peeps can help me find more motivation, please?!
What do you do in hard times to keep you motivated doing Art?... I'm not saying that tis is the first time I'm down, I've been through a lot of hard times but they always seem to summ up, and usually doing Art is my therepy, but at the moment I feel so empty.
Sorry for whining, but I bet I'm not the only one with these issues and maybe a little talk about the motivation in hard times can help more people than just me...
Maybe theres even someone Near Munich who might want to go out for a beer or so and excange creative opinions?! (Rollin?)
that does sound like a bad situation, I dont know what to say except I hope and pray you and your family/friends find a way out of this and that good opportunities come your way really soon. How come you cant be friends with the people at the last company you were at? is it cause they are far away now?
Art can be difficult if Im down, I tend to put on some music that I love and force myself to start working on my current project. After a few hours I sit back and realise Ive started to enjoy the project and made some progress and worked towards another portfolio piece.
To be honest sometimes a little time out from art is needed though. Just to reconnect and figure things out and spend time with people you care about. I know its not very popular to say things like this but I also go to God/Jesus with my life and sort things out on a personal/spiritual level with Him, thats just who I am.
I like the progress youve made on the model, all the bone bits and hard surfaces really add alot to him. Better muscle shapes and perhaps some more concepting of clothes/armour/accessories might be useful.
Of course I still have the collegues from the last company, its just the fakt that they are very far away so I can't go out for a beer or so with them or hang around.
I went an got my hair cut off... had quite long hair, now it's short and styled. I heard women do that in times like these and its quite nice to see a fresh look in the mirror.
And I went to my granddad and talked a bit so he doesn't have to feel so alone.
Dug out my skateboard, might try to beat me up a bit with that tomorrow...
Respect that God/Jesus thing, I've found my spiritual layer in Zen, might give a little meditation a try...
I just sculpted a few Human Heads for practice, your right about forcing yourself and having fun again after a while...
I'll try and pick him up now and see where it leads me, still need to place the team logo (think I'll do that like in the initial concept, hanging on a chain around his shoulder)
I think he could benefit from a "real" face. something a bit bigger and more expressive to give him more character. definition was mentioned already. GOOD LUCK!
Ok, I'm quite happy with the highpoly, I'll have to start the lowpoly now if I want to make it on time.
Maybe I'll find some time to ad a couple of seperate assets but I'll focus on finishing him the way he is. As I said, I somehow like him simple. He is "just" a Tank in this war anyway and I think he will be smashing a couple of enemy lines. So I think its more important to get the job done than try to impress with tons of useless details. As long as I get a nice texture and stand I think hes cool for the time spent

@SimonT: nuff said
So here's a little update:

I'll give the shapes a polish... Thanks for the hint...

Thanks for the kind words!
@StefanH: His "face" is in is chest and it's not quite the way I want it, but I'll show som more as soon as I feel happier with it
Haven't finished the high poly yet, just been paying about a bit...
I think I'll keep the "armor/clothing" simple to nothing, I somehow like it simple, allthough I might try some things like a shoulter plate, we'll see
