Going for robot scout class. Lack of zbrush etc. etc. makes it the logical choice.
First idea : Kind of a falconer, dude with bird hanging on his arm. Couple of directions for this one. Would like to know what people think makes a better direction, anatomically person/bird? (right) or very mechanised/abstracted (left)
Second idea was a pack of dogs, each with a signature attribute for scouting, working as a team.
My issue with the dogs is that, although in theory 10,000 polys is 10,000 polys no matter how you split it, dealing with the separate meshes on 1 texture sheet is going to confuse the hell outta me, and may end up being 3x the work anyways.
Both of these are just directions to move, in no way a final form (unless they become so).
Man I am liking where you are going but at the moment your concepts are looking a little flat. Which is cool in it's own way, for some reason they remind me of Egyptian hieroglyphics at the moment. I likes what I sees, but i needs to see more. I look forward to seeing some more soon. hahaha work, work, work. I know it will be ace, just keep going.
id say the first one up there is your best bet. doing 3 chars ( the dogs) isnt really doing yourself any favors, you're going to need every last tri/texture space you get for just 1.
Totally agree, doing 3 models is a dumb idea, so would whittle it down to just one.
After losing a bag in transit, finally set up again! Did a couple of quick sketches, but really need to start modelling if I'm to finish on time, so this will probably be the decider.
So, its a dog, WIP, probably won't finish tho...
The other is the base unit for the falconer, have yet to go into detail for the falcon/flying unit. Might be a helicopter kinda thing, rather than wings... So its pretty much a direct translation of the little silhouette I did, which I kinda still like even after exploring other avenues...
Gonna sleep on it, start modelling in couple o days. All y'all let me know what you think.
Here's a WIP. Unfortunately probably won't finish by the 11th... Lets just say that having a correct and working computer setup would make things much much easier!
Have done away with having two parts, have just focused on the scout section. The IDEA would involve a dude or another robot holding the scout, something I might work on later. So had to ditch the retro look a little as well...
Have another 1500 tris for some wires & tubing, and a few surface details. Bit hard to see some of the details, final pose might have the wings extended so it can be seen better...
Thoughts on texture? Been looking at military accessories, so an army green & metallic theme, with stencilled text /serial numbers etc. (and polycount logo of course!)

good luck with this one, coming out nicely so far.
I'm tempted to go back and do some nice paintovers after the comp, but we'll see...
