After long deliberation I have decided to start over. I was originally doing a chaos dwarf warrior (Here: http://boards.polycount.net/showthread.php?t=61575). My heart wasn't really in it TBH and I kinda rushed into it.
I've decided to try and do something a little more bit more ooomph! Something a bit more impressive, Something a bit more "Dominance War!".
Anyhoo...Here it is so far
I plan to give it a stylised finish and will be keeping it Super deformed. I'm definitely leaning toward the Centaur body. As for the heads, here's some doodles. I'll aslo be doing some full helmet designs as I might go down that route.
1. Bog standard Meat head
2. Tougher looking Meat head
3. Stylised Horned head (three horns)
4. another Stylised Horned head (Ram horns)
5. More stereotypical Demon head
6. Something different, almost fish like
7. Unicorn Meat Head
8. Skull head (helmet or exoskeleton?)
C&C welcome and please let me know which bodies or heads you like. Cheers
Cheers Ged. Think I'm going to stick with the centaur theme though. Only coz I had a nice idea for it and I'm gonna run with it.
UPDATE:
New concept, Stag-Centaur
Posture more upright and overall body mass tweaks
Could either be Norm or Demon, think i'm leaning toward Norm. I could do two versions and choose later of course
Head design will follow, will be a mix of Stag/Deer and Man
Lets Throw the Cat amongst the Pigeons. I woke up with an Ideas for him this morning which I think will suit the size and proportion of him.
I like the Stag-centaur as the texturing of him might work better with fur and skin. But I think the model proportions suit the Rhinotaur better, and he has a catchier name
I will also be doing a rhino head with the dual front horns, i'm looking for reference ATM, I think its a prehistoric rhino type i'm looking for. Another idea might be a Wooly Mammoth Rhinotaur which i'll also mock up.
Just trying to make sense of the 3D shape of both heads. I think where the rhino head looks great from the side its a bit bland at the 3/4 view. I prefer the Stag head at the moment and I think it has more potential for stylisation and also for larger horns and maybe a helmet/head guard type thing would work better on him. Will still be working toward doing rough sculpts for both as my turnaround sketches aren't great really.
Anyhoo
C&C as per and I still would like to know which y'all prefer. Stagtaur or Rhinotaur?
Yes. I've decided to go with the Stag. He has alot more going for him and the way I plan to texture it will be alot more fun i think. I'll be doing more experimenting with detail in the shape and the antlers when I get into ZBrush so we'll see how it goes.
UPDATE:
Very quick base mesh to see how the 3D is looking. Topology needs sorting out.
@Jackablade. Yes I've considered it. I'll probably try some out as well. Maybe a cross between Stag and Moose though, As moose horns tend to have rounded ends and look soft. Irish Elk antlers are also pretty awesome (link below) maybe too big TBH. I also plan to try some with antlers coming forward from the root which might add an agressive feel to it.
This is only a quick sculpt to see where i'm heading with this. Will be going back to sort the base mesh out properly. I certainly don't want to rush things.
I've also lengthened the Legs a little as I though he was looking a bit stumpy.
UPDATE:
Re-topology, first time i've done this. Think its went well and I quite enjoyed it TBH. Was going to use Silo but thought i'd try out ZBrush's topology tool. Will take this into Maya to fill holes and such. I think the hands need some attention also.
Quick update:
Quick paintover of how i'm thinking of doing the leather armour. I plan to have layered leather plates with celtic/tribal embossed designs. May also add shin guards in the same style.
Wow no idea how I have not seen this yet. Its looking great man, the stocky proportions are awesome and really make him more interesting than most other centaur like creatures. The sculpt looks like its coming along very nice as well. Keep up the great work, I look forward to seeing more.
Cheers Nrek . I was thinking of making this character quite stylised and cartoonesque (is that even a word) hence the exaggerated proportions. But it seems my sculpting hand wants to do realistic...Not to worry. I'm really enjoying the way it turning out.
UPDATE:
More sculpting on torso, head and arms
oh..and another thing......I HATE MODELING HANDS!!!!!ARRRGH!!!...lol
Looking good in your previous sculpt. I would loose the blobbyness in this latest one though, its making a good clean sculpt look amaturish. Keep it clean to start then work on the high frequency detail once you have the poly density (high subd) to do it cleanly. You can always bounce down a few levels if you need to add larger details. Just my 2c
Thanks all. Keep the Crits coming it really does help
Xalter: Yep. Agreed. I hadn't done a smooth pass over it. Fixed now. Higher level of detail still to come.
David-J: Also...Yep. Agreed. I've increased the size of the lower body. I think it now looks about right. I want to keep the stockiness. In reality a stag has very long slender legs built for speed. For my character i'll be keeping it more like an Oxen or Bull, built for strength.
Notebookguy: Cheers dude, Glad you like it.
UPDATES:
Lower body muscle blocking out. First time i've sculpted a quadruped. I didn't use any reference so i'll probs be going over it again.
I think the hooves are going to need a rethink. Maybe a new subtool for them is needed.
Very quick colour pass to show which areas will be fur and which will be skin. (EDIT: just realised the ass looks like skin..its not..its meant to be white fur. The whole under side of the lower body is white fur..just so you know)
Very quick mask extrude to visualise the armour plates on the model.
ok..been having trouble with my model. I was trying to project the high def detail onto a UV'd model. Was having some difficulty with holes (eye sockets, etc) in the model not projecting correctly and shit. I'll post some pics of what was happening later and how i fixed it. Anyway. Lost a few days figuring it out.
UPDATE:
Started blocking out the armour and accessories
Quick zbrush armour pattern test to see where i'm headed.
I'll have to sketch out the pattern in 2D first I think to get a good style going.
Ok...Going through a bit of a lean spell on the old creative front. Finding it hard to motivate myself on this bugger. Think i'm a bit daunted with how much work is still to be done.
BUT I'M GONNA DO THIS BASTARD!!!!!...
anyhoo....
UPDATE:
Armour blocked out
Hooves added (or is it hoofs)
Antlers model improved topo
next step. exporting everything and sculpting everything.
I have to say its looking increasingly likely that I'm not going to hit the deadline on this one. Unless there is an extension of course. Nevermind, I'll plod on with it anyway.
UPDATE:
All armour basic sculpt
I still need to sculpt the main body with alot more detail and make it more asymmetrical . I'm gonna add detail to the armour itself using Crazybump. Might save me a bit of time doing it that way. And I think i'm on the brink of my poly limit anyway TBH.

Let me finish!....lol. I should have realised how busy it is on this forum and posted quickly...sorry
Solid work so far. I like centaur idea as well. Should make far a great overall profile for this. Keep up the good work.
Quick Update:
Bull Centaur Body defined a bit,
shoulders and head position changed.
Skull and Helmet versions

I'm liking the skull head btw- could convert it into a helmet? I also think the weapon's neat

I like the spiky antlers myself, but a more complex overall shape might add some interest.

Bigger Antlers
Bigger Ears
Mouth opened

Next up: UV mapping and scuplting, also need to design some heavy leather armour at some point soon.

Hi Def sculpting test on face. Will have to think about how i'm going to tackle the beard and fur.
Anatomy improvements, mainly on back
