Yea I hope most of the improvements are on the technical side because that didnt really blow me away at all, graphically I cant really tell its not cryEngine 2.
seems like they are aiming it at being usable for consoles now, which could be pretty dandy. although I dont know if it warrants the 3 instead of being just 2.x. meh, Im sure more info should arise soon enough.
THIS IS CRYENGINE 2 BUT RUNNING ON PS3 AND 360. Why they call it CryEngine 3 I have no idea but the only real intended difference is that this is running on consoles.
same thing for me. if they didn't write cryengine3, i would say they still use the old core. for me it seems that rendering polygons reached a certain boundary. all that could boost would be better lightning. but this is still something way to expensive for present specs.
there must be a reason why pixar doesn't do realtime movies yet.
but for sure there is a lot of stuff which improves development workflow.
Yep, looks like Cryengine 2 optimised for consoles.
Pretty impressive-looking, still, but it's certainly not "new" ... just performance has improved.
It's also fairly clear that one of the things they dropped to get the performance up was the SSAO (screen-space ambient occlusion) shader effect - it is conspicuous by its absence in those videos...

Blame marketing for the confusion.
I didn't really notice all this until I read the threads Raptor posted.
I didn't notice the absence of the SSAO, but that could be due to the 640x vid not making it obvious enough. Its nice to see it on the console side, but that vid doesn't impress me as much as id hoped.
BTW when are the next gen of consoles supposed to be coming? 2010, 2011, or 2012?
yeah didnt notice lack of ssao either, but its visually the hottest shit on console now if you ask me. will be interesting to hear how they handle workflow/authoring for the different platforms
