Tried a bunch of faces and styles based on feedback, but figured if it's unclear I'd just scrap it, keep the elements I liked and try something fresh. Here's my starting point sketch for a Norm Warlord. Still working out the color scheme, advice is very welcomed....
i'm a fan of the wonky proportions and especially the beak blade. Maybe play on the size of the character -- it would be cool to have little tiny birds circling around his head to insinuate gigantic proportions (like you do now, but more exaggerated).
I haven't updated in a while, so here's some silhouettes of my base mesh so far. Still a little rough...but getting there...
Valandar - are you sure we have to use both? From what I read it says "color and/or insignia"... Does anyone know definitively how this works?
konstruct - Thanks!
AHotHandSandwich - I'll mess with some engravings on the blade.
r4ptur3 - Great idea, I've done some real quick and dirty paint ups based on your comments. Scale will definitely be fun to play with.
Continuing tweaking of form trying to find the right rhythm in all the shapes and to get a strong silhouette. Pushing the asymmetry a little more with shoulder pads, etc...
Getting relatively close to UV time I'm thinking.... crit welcome!
SQUAWK!!!!!! Base colors roughed in more or less. More painting to come. Gotta rig/skin this guy to get a pose and pedestal down next as well...
Here's some story, if interested:
Phothol - Norm Warlord
When you want to fix a mouse problem, you get a cat....... When you want to stop a world from getting overrun by a myriad of infernal demons, you call Phothol.... Phothol, and Grephlin (his beak-blade), make killing demons look eaaaaasy, and they work for a very reasonable hourly rate. Phothol is able to lay eggs and birth fledglings from his mouth at the SAME TIME...amassing hordes of ferocious hungry newborns, searching for demon flesh to feast upon... The eggs produce nonflying bird creatures, much like miniature versions of himself. With his "bird breath" he is able to spit out throngs of disgusting little birds with sharp beaks. While he might seem unstoppable, he admittedly is quite useless against the Machines, so he always relies on fighting with company.
AHotHandSandwich - thanks for the idea, hopefully I'll get some time to play with a bunch of detail ideas as a whole pass...
Oh man, I really like your bird style.
This could be a character from "Radiata Stories".
Hope you don't dislike this kind of Japanese RPG.
Cool shapes and colours. Keep it up.
Started playing with posing this guy. Still working on the textures.
Trying to figure out a pedestal, what do you guys think between these sketches or please if you have ideas you think would fit the character, I'd love to hear!!
haZe - thanks!
garagarape - AHahaha, Im not a huge fan of most japanese animation, im going for a toy figure kind of look hopefully, but thanks for the kind words!!
AimBiZ - Thanks!
Raider - yeah! Tf2 = awesome!
konstruct -thanks
55joe- currently you're seeing flat color, no normals. Guess it's stylized and hopefully doesnt need normal map! (cause I don't have time to make high res sculpt, hahaha!
kite - Very much appreciated!
tacit math - thanks you sir
conte - thanks, youre paintings are pretty inspiring man. Really awesome colors and ideas going on your thread.
Hey guys, I'm kind of a noob when it comes to posting, would anyone mind letting me know how you can post a big image above which you can click a bar to expand to full size. I've seen this for a bunch of peoples images, and it doesn't look like my image is just small....
Thanks a bunch, and keep up the awesome work everyone!
Very cool dude! I really like the idea of his pedestal being a cloud like in C, but at the same time I think the trees in pedestal D really help give a sense of scale. Tough choice :poly122:. But im sure either way you go it will look great .
SQUAWK!!!!
Got a rough in for my pedestal, and threw the bird breath little guys in. Ideas, thoughts? I'm thinking of scrapping the bird beak staff he used to have, and maybe switching to something real subtle?
Definitely still playing around with poses, what kind of poses would you like to see?
nrek - thanks, I changed it up a bit, but went with the core value of something to sell scale, hope you like this option, even though it wasn't in the original sketches.
Ged- hope this is similar enough or better than the one you chose.
AimBiz - kind of C combined with D... with a mix of Z! hahaha
mitera - thanks for your compliments!
The new pedestal is great. The little birds flying around are awesome, too. Really sells that scale. One thing to be careful of... On the image on the right it looks like he is trying to eat that one bird. Dunno if you meant for that but it definitely could change the perception.
I'm curious as to what you come up with for his weapon now. Since he is a Norm, he has to have a single, magical weapon. Don't forget that! Hehe.
WOoow loving those colors. I like where your going with the scale on this guy, the birds are a nice touch! maybe try fooling with some dynamic camera angles a la shadow of the colossus style, (low angle) and I bet some atmospheric perspective with a sky backdrop would go long way.
Here's the poem to give some story to the character. I like this more than the model itself, hahaha, had a lot of fun with it. Going for a more young feel, to match the art style. Let me know if you guys know of a cool storybook font, cause I'm using a default and it's a little hard to read I think.
aesir- Thanks for the enthusiasm!
coldkodiak - thanks, good comment, a difficult thing to tackle for me, since his character is actually pretty peaceful, he fights when challenged....
Bal - thank you very much good sir!
basho - he def doesnt eat the birds, he spits them out. Thanks, I gotta work on that weapon. damn.....
ashleyjukes - It is an honor to hear that from you. Your work, (and your husbands) is amazing!
rasmus - thanks dude, somehow hadnt seen yours either, couldnt believe I missed it. super cool!
konstruct - Good tips, I definitely needs some atmospheric color, and need to find out how to get it, without muting out the intense colors... should be a good challenge....I'll try out the low angles and see if I can get a good vibe/silhouette.

Thanks man, that means a lot, you're one of my favorite 3d artists! Look forward to checking out your stuff...
Thanks! I haven't watched zenoclash before, I'll have to check it out. I like your bird guy, too, the jive turkey!

I suggest whatever you make his pose, to have it tie into his demeanor or his story.
The pedestal is very appropriate, great work.
