yeah he originally started off more along those lines, as a conglomeration of a lot of corpses all bound together, but after scribbling for a while it turned into a bag of meat strapped to giant bones, i just thought it read better when it was less complex.
ultimately, its a demon. the bones are huge because they're just plain evil:)
i could just scale him down to a more human size...
is anyone else bothered by the scale?
I like the big- it might be cool to pack some smaller bones where the larger bones are protruding from. Like its a huge sack of different dead things ranging in size, and the seals around the large walking bones arent 100% tight, so, some of the smaller contents are dribbling out.
thanks for the feedback guys,
i did this variation to address some of the ambiguous scale issues.
basically he's a bag of skin bound and stitched around some elephant bones... and with a tusk stuck in his face... for fierceness.
i'll spend some more time on this for sure though, this was pretty quick and dirty
Another iteration... wanted to get rid of the 'meat shorts' look and enhance the tendons
The area under the chin/chest is a little vague, maybe more stitches:)
MEAT da na na na BONE!! Very metal my good sir. and a very interesting idea. i think right now my favorite part is the striations on the shoulder zone, maintains ambiguity but adds a bit to the functional realism of it, creating some lumpy fun muscle groups would be sweet, also some changes in the flesh color would be neat to see some skin some exposed muscle? maybe not love the touch of the splintered bone feet, sweet stuff!
i can't believe the speed of this forum:)
thanks for the feedback.
St. Joris:
i actually wanted to push the 'out of balance' ... this guy is a pretty much a demonic frankenstein... loosely assembled from bone, fleshy bits, and some twine for the sole purpose of flattening stuff.
Woogity:
at v2 a friend of mine suggested adding the broken bones from v1 back in because he felt it looked painful... i thought what better pain than to be walking on them... plus it shows he's covered some ground.
soon he'll be bouncing along on stumps:)
i tried adding maggots raining from his eyes, but it didnt read at this distance very well:)
a few more days and its time to stop scribblin' and start moodlin.
yeah this is pretty cool i. I only worry there argent enough high frequency details. you have the med and low freq, just needs some little details now.
Cool idea, i agree with muzz though he's so huge his bony legs and arms could do with being made out of smaller bones, and more small scale details, smaller stitches etc would definitely sell the scale.
Its getting much better man, i like him on all fours kinda gorillia postured, esp with no feet really balance has to suck for this thing. i like the maggots idea could be great for some high frequency to have giant wounds on him festering with maggots!. also would be cool to see some shredded skin hanging from the underbelly.
also dont check this out if your squeemish, but could help for the skin details
NICE- I am a HUGE fan of this entry. although I feel he needs something on him as a scale ref. I could totally see this being some super creepy creature in a game that's a bout knee height and skitters around all creepy style and I know thats probaby not what you had intended.
*maybe his feet could look more like that have been hitting the ground over and over again with enormous power and there all flattend, smashed and cracked.
*maybe some war banners and some framework holding them up on his back?
*maybe save some tris to do a vulture so for the beauty shot you could do a flock of buzzards that fly around picking at the moist bits.
*Also,I hate to say it, but it might be cool to toy with the idea of a rider- maybe not anything recognizable as a biped or anything, the rider could be as bizarre and abstract at the creature itself, but something at the reigns of this thing would probably help give a sense of scale.
thanks for the feedback guys... did some more pulling around his mouth and face.
i totally agree with the scale issue Konstruct... and i definitely think the splintering on the bone ends is a good way to sell it. i was also thinking of mashing some branches etc into the splinters of the 'feet'.. klingons from all the stomping:)
war banners? vultures? also good ideas.. will have to do some experimenting.
and if its still not working.. maybe a few skewered people on his tusk:)
back from easter, full of ham.
did some scale adjustments to the stitches and ropes to make him seem bigger, and started adding smaller details to the broken bone ends... will continue this tomorrow.
wow its been a while since i posted..
currently a few hundred over the 10k budget, but i've got some backfaces on the ropes to get rid of.
i still plan on adding some old tattered war banners as you suggested Konstruct, they're coming.
here's a screen.. target mesh, occlusion, and normal map. thank you marmoset, thank you xnormal.
started some diffuse texturing, its pretty early but i havent posted anything in a while...
no spec map yet, lots of seams to fix later, but just focusing on the meat right now, bones after that.
Somehow I never saw this post until it was finished! Pretty awesome man. I would love to see this guy with a walk cycle. I mean, it would creep the hell out of me....but in a good way! You used DOF and composite of the background image nicely in your beauty shot. A lot of people overdo the DOF, but here it looks great. The low camera angle also gives a nice intimidating sense of scale on this sick monstrosity.

Im not completely sure about the scale, having bones as big as that doesnt really work in a scale sense. Perhaps build him out of smaller bones?

I like the overall scale just not the huge non specific bones.
eeeww.
