Thanks for the support, already feels like more support than last years entire dominance war haha
While I still like my old ideas, I scribbled something else today:
For now Im kind of thinking of a mix of the second from the top mixed with the 'split head' from my first concepts The drawings on the right have white 'holes' in them, these will be openings from which a constant stream of lava will poor out to pave the way from hell!
I have a cool idea:
Im planning to make a demon Prince, only a spoiled little brat version of one. He will be small and have childlike features(big head, small body, babyfat etc) and will be riding on one of his toys he got from his daddy(after bitching about it all year, it is hell after all). His 'toy' is a hellish creature that has been tormented for centuries to enrage it with the lust for WAR! The princes' slaves(who look just like the prince, except they are lesser versions of him with small horns, no armor etc) will control the beast with chains, to prevent it from escaping and harming the prince.
SOOO in the end I will probably be making 3 different models:
1 prince(his weapon will be a whip to control the beast)
2-4 slaves(based on the prince, number of slaves depends on what the size the beast will have)
1 beast
Let me know what you think!!! Maybe I should take a step back.... hmmmm...
Both sound solid to me; I think the important thing is what kind of model you want to do. If you go with the brat prince, you can get away with some cool stylisation and a lot of emotion, whereas a split head is creepier when it's more realistic. That's quite a big decision, and one you'll have to make yourself .
I love the sound of the brat demon prince idea, but make sure you really think over the amount of work it'll be. Cause right now, it sounds like a LOT. If you're up for the challenge... and have lots of spare time... then what the hell, go for it!!
agreed with the below. Also, obsidian is a volcanic glass that has been used for centuries as blades since when cracked it holds an edge the thickness of a molecule. It would be wicked to see some obsidian shards sticking out of this guy in some places, or a claw with obsidian talons that can regenerate from the heat within his body....just sayin seen lava creatures before, but theres lots of types of volcanic rock would be cool with lots of variety to his hard bits. some refs.
This one is probably not going to pass the PG rating
Colors are temp, and I still need to stick a head in the fleshy part(no pun intented). The idea is that its a parasitic demon thingy that has taken over another, stronger demon(fuck ticks, life is though in hell!). The parasite is actually positioned inside the pink fleshy part, its antlers(is that the right word in english?) stick out as if they look like demon horns.
Also: GIVE ME SOME SUPPORT TROOPS! Im fighting this war for you guys, last year I hardly got any tips/crits either... boohoo!
Looking cool so far dude, I like the little parasite idea. First off, I know the colors are just a temporary thing but that pink is a little too neon right now. As for the sculpt goes I think the upper arm could use some more work. Right now it almost looks like he has 3 separate sets of deltoids and biceps. Just work on the anatomy a bit more on the arms and it will look great.

yeah, theyre kind of random blobs right now, thanks for the tips! My internet was down when I made them, Ill definately redo them!
Thats pretty awesome! I really like the design but the color scheme is kind of GA and not really PC. Since they put it specifically in the rules this time around it might be a good idea to go black/green, just a thought.
@Scrumpy and GED, thanks! I have decided to go with the left version The whole idea behind my entry is that it IS a creature inside another creature :P
@woogity, thanks! I havent decided on the scale just yet, right now it fits in the topic of abomination so I think hes about 1.5 or 2 times as tall as a normal human.
@konstruckt, thanks! Yeah, I definately need to hurry up, Im hoping for an extension, probably won't finish in time if I dont get another week extra Im affraid
@Vig thanks, yeah the colors are just temporary, won't be bothering with those untill I get all my maps baked, will try to keep ik black+green, thanks for the reminder
Thanks for all your replies, Im almost done with the high poly, will probably start with the low-poly tommorow, it's going to be a bitch!
A little test with the low poly, the maps are ugly right now, but the test came out great(hardly any seams!) :P
Still need to:
- Make the horns/arms that come out of its neck/body
- Add hair and spikes on lowpoly model
- Make all the maps properly(diff, spec, normal)
If it's one thing I've learned this DW, it's that I need a new PC :P
Might need to check the unwrap, the pixel density looks a little off. The shoulders are a bit stretched and blurry but the feet are nice and sharp. Need to take care of that seam running down the back. If you bake with both halves there, but just move one half outside of the 0-1 space it should take care of the seam. Then delete that half and mirror/symmetry the good side.

Thanks again for your tips Vig! I'm affraid you were too late, as you can see in the image below the pixel density IS way off(the big claws are lower rest than other parts, but its also because I havent sharpened that area yet). It's amazing how one can miss these things when focussing too much on their own work Im affraid I can't afford to fix it anymore(no time), but the good news is that I already fixed the seams on the back(thanks for the tip!).
I finally completed the modeling part! Expect a full shot soon!
Anyway, here's where Im at now, I only really worked on the diffuse sofar(the spec/normal are default crazybump images):
It's a lot less noticeable now, and yea so easy to get zoomed in with your head down, we all do it
I think you're doing some good things to take care of the problem. You could probably blur the fine details in the higher density pieces and continue to sharpen the low and find some really close to a middle ground. Probably not go as detailed in the bigger pieces.
Probably drop the saturation and turn up the contrast. It's kind of bright and colorful right now, which is a style I love but might not be the right flavor for DW4?
Yea times tickin' away, even with the extension its going to be kind of tight for a lot of people, but I bet a lot more people finish.
looking really good, it almost looks like it doesnt need specular but you might actually want to consider allowing the specular to do some of this definition.
Got kind of bored with it, so this baby is having a facelift! In the meantime enjoy some diffuse mappage(SEAMS!). Still havent done anything with the specular/normal map tweaking yet.
Thanks Vig & Ged, as you can see I have tried to work on your tips(well, except for making a decent specular that is). More coming soon......
I really like what your doing color-wise on this- its a tad outlandish- but that's never a bad approach! it looks like it could use some`more res in the shoulder/torso region.
@408: thanks! Im actually not using any shader, so thats a huge compliment lol! It's a screenshot of the max viewport, I'll post my maps later when I have more time. The only 'unusual' setting is that the diffuse is 50% self-illuminated. Yeah, I will definately make a nice spec for this, just trying to finish the rest of the model and the diffuse first.
@konstruct, thanks for the compliments as well! WHen I have some extra time Ill try to work on those areas
FUCK YEAH! This is my second Dominance war I've entered and finished!!! ALthough I stand no chance of actually getting in the top 100, it's been a great learning experience!
Soooo tired now, it's 3 PM here and my computer is about to explode! :P
Thanks GED, yeah the model is a complete mess right now I will definately pimp it for my portfolio. Because I scrapped the whole bug idea(it was getting too noisy/busy imo) the model is now actually less than 6000 triangles, and I could probably fit the textures on one 1024x1024, perfect for a portfolio piece (also, I use an almost default crazybump spec map, I could really make that eye stand out if I had some more time).

VIg: Yeah, I think Im going with the whole molten/dried lava/stone look, thanks!
Another lunch break quickie:
Just working out some ideas, some parts are still boring(like the whip and legs)

lol, probably taking this too far now
lol- are you going to do the horned head thing? I liked that concept a lot.
Only, which version should I do? I like #1 the most so far.
cool idea man HURRY!!!!!!!
Looking cool time to get crackin!
