No messing about this year.
Just noodling about at this stage. Trying a bit of the Andrew Jones thumbnailing technique. Remains to be seen whether it's of any use, but at least I'm having fun and have got some funky looking shapes.
Going to sleep on this now and see what it looks like tomorrow.

Its a real shame he didnt actually do any art lectures at the wellington workshop when i saw him, instead heonly did unguided demos.
I think you might get some better results if you try this stuff out in alchemy, but this is a good start.
Keep it up .
Andrew jones wants to have babies with it.

Thanks for the link, Muzz.
Playing with Alchemy (as, it seems, is everyone else). I'm liking the mount idea at this stage. The tall, lithe mount with the small, stumpy armoured knight seems like it might work well.
Giant crabby guy also has a certain appeal, but I think there's likely to be a few like him in the comp.
Time to try consolidating some ideas.
Bottom one might be kinda neat if it was developed further.
I mean this concept obviously sucks on a number of levels, but I'm not sure whether the basic concept is fundamentally crap or whether if I redrew the whole thing with a consolidated design for the gear, a less half arsed weapon and magic items, better proportions on the thin man and less action-figureness on the big guy, whether I'd have something with any potential.
We shall see, I guess. Still plenty of time for experimentation. If anyone's got any thoughts, feel free to leave them. I could use a less addled mind on this.
I'm certainly on the side of the anteater giraffe at this point but I want to explore all the ideas buzzing around my head before I commit to anything.
its a neat idea, but the execution, imho, suggests quite a bit of weakness in your characters. that's not a bad thing, if thats what is required. but i suppose in war you want somebody who looks like he could plow you down.
two ideas you could mess with are:
a) a super developed one half melded with a super-undeveloped one
possibly to the extent of having a giant connected to a foetus. but he needs to evolve to protect that foetus, so u can have some creative anatomical things going on there?
b) both equally developed, and looking as if they can work together, though they need to be conjoined at a stronger point than the head
just some thoughts of mine. i hope you dont mind.
You are, I think, probably right, particularly in the case of the most recent design. I did deliberately avoid the... what do they call it on South Park... "Conjoined Twin Myslexia" with the fetus stuck to the bigger guy as it's something I've seen in Dominance war a few times in the past.
I'm going to have one more go at him tomorrow, see if I can develop some kind of rigging to make the whole thing vaguely plausible otherwise I might move on to other, better ideas.
There's probably a design in here somewhere, but I'm bored now. On the up side, the quasi victorian costumes and twirling has given me a new idea. A better idea! Or maybe another lame idea. We shall see.
Don't think I'll worry about the other conjoined twin design now.

I started by watching the Labyrinth and then did some studies of animals with interesting noses. There are more noses to come and then I shall combine them into some kind of super nose!
Pangolins have wicked mutton chops.
Ha, those chops are great, never seen one of those before.
All the way to page 13, eh. We can't be having that
There we go.
Fixed the anatomical anomalies. Makes him a look a bit more nomral and less alien now which isn't an entirely good thing. I suppose he'll be fine once I get a saddle and some other bits and pieces on him.
I'll keep fiddling about with a few more designs.
So many concepts to do.
Another crack at the mount sticking closely to the original silhouette. I think it looks ok, but need a bit more time to consider.
currently the mount looks a bit clumsy: as if a gust of wind would throw him down
either give him slightly beefier front legs, or shorten him a bit.
just my thoughts on it
otherwise, its an interesting concept
Speaking of which, I drew up a really basic knight. Proportions are a little odd as a did a bunch of squashing and stretching to get a shape I was mostly happy with. In retrospect painting directly over the silhouette may not have been the ideal way to work but whatever.
Mostly traditional armour design at this stage. I quite like the simplicity and think it has a least a little of the Brian Froud Labyrinth flavour I was hoping for. I think in a competition with so many hugely complicated pieces a simple, strong design might help it to stand out. That said, I'm going to do at least one more design with a more elaborate, decorative armour.
Got the rider pretty much sorted. Elevations don't exactly match, but you get the general idea. I probably won't have the crotch clock in the final piece. It seemed like I needed something there and I was listening to the Hip-Hop Show on the radio. You know how it is.
I'm reasonably happy with the mount now. The proportions could still use a bit of a tweak here and there, but I'll worry about that when I get it into 3d. Still going to add some bits and pieces - saddle bags, maybe a sword and sheath. I might redesign the armour a little so that it matches the goblin a bit better. Also have to design up my own version of the Greentooth Logo so that it fits the character a bit better.
I'm also going to add a bracket thing to sit the base of the battle standard/lance in. The final pose will have the lance set in this with the flag flying out behind. I think it'll make for a more dramatic piece.
Anyway, think I'm going to just do the goblin guy for the comp and save the pangolin for after. Kinda sucks, but at the rate I'm going here, I'll be lucky to get that much done.
I wasted ages trying to get the long, tapered mask to look good but it just wasn't translating very well into 3d. I'm pretty sure i'm just going to go with the unmasked version with the new helm which obviously still needs a lot of work. I do kinda like the conquistadore look though. I'll probably still add the scale mail to the back of the helm as its a nice link to the mount. Shoulder armour isn't bugging me too. Might just have it on one side - it's all pretty symmetrical at this stage.
Here's the Pangolin as he currently stands. I'm not sure the best way to do the scales. Adding them individually as subtools seems pretty cumbersome.

I could probably knock out a semi-passable quality final piece by the end of the week as long as I didn't get flooded by freelance stuff, but I think given I don't actually have any chance of winning a prize here I might as well go back to the drawing board until I'm completely happy and finish the whole thing off in my own time.
Here's where I finished up.
I'd still love to hear any critiques and comments people might have.
Best of luck to the rest of you.
