actually i've been doing thumbs for the last week waiting for this damned comp, and i kinda settled on this pose regardless of whichever "theme" they imposed, as i felt it was a very powerful one to work with.
as far as unique masses go, i've never been too good on the concept side of things, so stylising some of the proportions for me is limited to what i can do, the chest for example, is pretty massive compared to his abdomen and head.
The way to break out of that is to randomly scribble and make really bizarre masses, then pull them back from the unbelievable just into the believable. Thumb nailing doesn't work if you know exactly what you want.
i understand, but this is far from a comfort zone for me. i'm already uncomfortable competing with you guys. let alone trying something completely new to my.
i'm settling for a middleground where i can push things i already know to a new level, at the same time as trying a couple of new things.
for the weapons, head, and some of his accessories, i'll definitely give the scribbles a go, but i'm in love with this pose xD

This is breaking the rules surely. The competition only started this morning.

I agree with the other though gir, since you've got more or less a clear first pass, try exploring around it first. You might surprise yourself. Best of luck dude!
holy shit, snowfly, i think you just made my morning. Completely out of the context of this thread, that pic is probably the greatest thing ive seen in a long time, im gonna print it out and post on top of my monitor to keep me in check.
gir - you're doing yourself a great disservice by resigning to "i've never been too good on the concept side of things". Just scribble some stuff out and start piecing together ideas, dont worry about making it pretty.... yet
The proportions look pretty generic tbh, but if you're settled on these you should still try and find a few interesting silhouette twists for this guy. Chunky armor, bags, smaller weapons, some random accessoires.. basically stuff that is large enough to make a change visually. Thumbnails are your friends, I think it's still a bit early to be blowing this design up to a full sized concept.
Nothing wrong with idea farming before the comp. So long as you start your actual concept once the comp begins I fail to see how it could be consdered cheating. If that were the case then practicing sculpting beforehand should be cheating too. I have had a character in mind for dom war since like 3 months ago and just my luck it fits the brief.
Good luck dude, looking forward to some killer work in this thread.

I think you should go back to really quick gestures and generate some unique masses.
Its good, but trying to get some original ideas is always better.
