Hi there, this is my first post on Polycount after years of lurking and stalking you all :icon60:
Gorilla WARFARE
My brother and I recently decided to create a game together. I am the artist. The only artist, so i'm creating all of the media for concept to character to environment. My brother is the genius programmer, he's creating an engine using ogre and c++ amongst other things. I couldn't hope to understand it myself.
I won't go into the fine details of the game, but basically it will be a single player/network playable sci fi, cartoony platform/action/puzzle game, where you play as a Monkey/Gorilla duo in an exotic new environment where the wildlife have recently become subject to illegal government testing, accidentally resulting in everything from super-intelligence in primates amongst other species, to hideous weaponized mutation and natural disaster. You must survive as part of the first non-human, intelligent race, (possibly more intelligent than humans) and work as the two top agents for the new society, hoping to expand and develop to the top of the world. They will soon find out how they came to be, and will have to respond to the lurking military threat, who aim to cover up their government's mistake by
any means necessary.
This is all set in a futuristic style universe, not neccesarily
our future.
Our goal is to get a playable engine with a fully scalable environment for everyone on the internet to go nuts in for free. perhaps a little demo if it gets that far, which I'm going to try really hard to see it does.
A quick environment concept, you will find most of my concepts are very quick, doing all the art is a long enough process already, so I just do concepts to get a basic idea in my head of what to do.
Concept (told you it's quick)
Gorilla!
Monkey! (WIP)
Some stuff I need to finish and texture (for both Gorilla and Monkey)
Gorilla is completely rigged, screwed up his mouth but that's not urgent.
here's a video of him in an idol pose, breathing. boring.

Well, I hope you like it so far. Expect lots of updates.

The game sounds neat but the scope is way too large for two people to ever finish. If I were you I'd aim to get a fun little multiplayer version out first.
this is the first scene of the game by the way, and I'm thinking part of the menu screen.
If you want to "humanize" the gorillas, give them pants and cigarettes.
I cant check out the video for some reason though...
I've been thinking about the way I'm going to create levels, and I've decided I spend too much time creating one-use environments. they are ok for a couple of scenes, but I need to start thinking about mass producing levels. So I've decided to start churning out pieces to be used in our level editor, and creating levels the way they do in most engines, by piecing blocks together to make structures. so far in about a day I've produced a wall, a corner, a cut away of the wall and a doorway, and i'm really starting to like how promisingly easy this seems to be, so maybe i'll eventually get somewhere witht this stuff soon
The new stuff (took about a day in all) and a mockup of what the lighting might look like in the end: note to self, less mockups, more work
we're thinking we will fade the walls as when a characters is concealed behind them instead of having awkward, in the character's face camera movement. for each room.
let me know what you think.
but You have a good point about not forcing the camera to be always in a fixed position regarding the character standing in a certain place.
i like the style, it reminds me of fallout vaults, also a bit portal - like steryle - clean environment.
i'm crossing my fingers for this one, as it shows a lot of potential.
keep us posted with WIP.
cheers.
hobo - I had to look that word up. I'm flattered. :S
razorb - Thanks dude! keep watching.
c22dunbar - yeah that control will be available too, want to make it as user friendly as possible thanks for the kind words, that's kinda what I'm shooting for.
