Okay stumbled upon this, and it took me a few tries but when you make it work it is amazing. You look at two pictures side by side and cross your eyes in a way to combine them and see a 3d image. Here is what you will be looking at.
edit-changed to flower pic. apparently easier
So basically, you look at this image and cross your eyes until you see the two images combine to make a third in the middle. Then try to focus on the middle one with your eyes still crossed. Try to focus on it while sort of relaxing your eyes. I found it easiest when your face is about two feet away from the screen. If you did it right you will see the flower in 3d. If you are one of those people who is good at seeing those hidden pictures in patterns, this should be no problem for you, it's basically the same concept.
Here are some more detailed instructions if I'm not explaining it well enough. -
More detailed (and confusing) instructions
And links to two more images to try it on.

Car3
Try to make your own out of photos, or renders of a sweet model.

I remember playing tricks to myself as a kid at school, drawing little squares at different distances and having fun making them 'pop' in front of the grid lines by "looking in 3D" :P
For some reason I don't like it too much when it's a real life picture. It's more fun with miniatures, models, drawings - art in general!
Smirnoffka - I assume he just takes a step or two over and takes another pic. Btw- I was born in Perth. [saw your location].
Do I have the skills to do this? You take out one of your effing eyes and see if you have the skills.
haha i used to do this too!
I remember also salvador dali made some 3d paintings like this, that you could look at crosseyed, or with a setup with mirrors. I need to find those again, it was very cool
I never got it to look "3d."
I remember doing some renders to get this effect, too. Neat trick :P

no problems here getting it to work.
WORD same here i beg every day that 3d is not taking off and we will go straigth to plugs in your head that directly stimulate your visual cortex !
There is some other stuff I have found on mechanical implants that do the same thing so you don't look like a Borg, but I can't find the company. I'll need to re-research that one.
The proper term for this is stereogram. Looking it up on Wikipedia gave me an image that is MUCH easier to pull off, because the difference between the angles is much smaller. If you can't do the cars, like me, try this one instead. I have no problems with that, it's much more pleasant to look at. And doesn't hurt nearly as much...
If that's still too hard or headache inducing, move away from the monitor, or save the picture and scale it down. The less you have to cross your eyes the easier it'll be to percieve the effect.
I put my hands with the lights off so they were in silhouette and flipped so they were the same shape against the two images repectively to see if I could touch the 3d flower. It werks! I get a 3rd center hand I can move over the 3d flower.
:thumbup::thumbup: == :thumbup:
using mirrors instead of eye crossing sounds more pleasant? two mirrors?
hahaha. ....oww.
Changed pic from car to flower.
same question: can you look like this cat?

The crazy thing is he did it all by hand.

Anyway, it was a trip looking at everything. Rocks, trees, buildings, people. Now when I look at things with one eye I absolutely understand what people mean by loss of depth perception. Rumor has it Rembrandt had the same condition, seeing double, so maybe it doesn't make a difference, but to finally be able to see 3D is unbelievable.
it took some time to get the first one, but then it becomes a breeze
real cool stuff
I just want to be able to render something like this!
Bad fucking ass for people like myself! w00t!
EYE BORG
I used to have BOOKS and books of magic eye, and except for a few tricky ones, I could see them fine. Can't really get any of the images in this thread to work And now my eyes HURT. O.<
... -runs off in search of her old magic eye books- ...
MY Eyes are NOW permanantly stuck cross eyed!
hmmm dont see why it shouldnt be possible...maybe just a bit uncomfortable for the viewer to strain themselves like this tho
heres one i made recently

Any the first pic, looks like 2D cutouts :P
this is a classic. The first minute and ten seconds explains how to see it, but you don't need to go to all the trouble of making a viewer.
that was the face I was pulling while trying it
This one's the hardest, but worth the eye strain

he dose some pretty artworks with this 3D stuff. hurts the eyes after a while, definently a mus see
Cross your eyes until the image becomes 3 frames side by side, then start focusing on the center frame.
Eric - fantastic pics. They have intense depth when viewed this way.
