i have a lenovo s10, so basically the same specs, silo2 feels pretty responsive for lowpoly stuff.. haven't done much more than loading stuff up and rotating around a bit, the display is a bit too cramped for me too work with for anything serious.
Is silo still competitive? I used the program a while back but haven't really returned to it, seemed very buggy and broken the last time I used it. Is anyone using it frequently for their day job?
I use it quite a bit at home for personal projects and when I was doing environment art I used it quite a bit at work. I haven't had it crash or run into any bugs, but you could have tried a really old release?
Some features are a bit immature like sculpting but the quick and easy interface more then makes up it, something Blender really needs to work on. I haven't tried Modo, it looks great and its feature set keeps growing. But now I "make things move" as opposed to "make things", so for the most part I'm happy with Max or Silo. For a while I used Maya to do some modeling but that was more just to be familiar with it. Naked Maya is a pig to work with and requires a lot of customization to be even remotely useful to someone coming from Max or Silo.
Id go with Lightwave personally. Layout gets pretty intensive, but Modeler will run quite happily on a dell inspiron P3 without hardware rendering. I know LW is kinda the ugly stepchild of the 3d world, but the modeler part of the program is amazing.
Wow! With such a large response about Silo, and the fact that my friend with an eeepc has it running fine - I'm gonna go with that. I'll try the trial and see how it fares!

I'd be interested to hear your take on your new netbook. Would you mind posting some initial impressions?
