I've been a member of Polycount for a while, but I was encouraged to sign up by the fantastic work in the Low Poly thread. I really love the style, and would love to make my own models. However, there are so many options for software I'm completely baffled at where to start. I've done a little bit of modeling and animation in Swift 3D, so I've covered some of the basics (mesh editing, texture wrapping, keyframing). I'm not sure if I would use the models for games or animation, but I was hoping to be able to rig them at some point (once I learn how to). If possible, what software would you recommend that would work on a Dell laptop with Windows XP? I'd love to be able to take my work with me like I do with my comics. Of course, free software would be preferable, but I could probably shell out a bit of money for a good program. Many thanks in advance!

Personally I think 3dsmax is one of the better packages for low poly modeling as it lets you tweak things in details (e.g smoothing groups, preserve UV`s,...) with lots of tools in that area most other packages simply dont offer.
Silo is nice for modeling but its best use is for subDiv. modeling - not so much texturing or rendering.
Blender has imo. a crappy interface and control scheme - totally useless to me for modeling (but there is hope with the next version)
