Downsizing an image. Best sampling method?

I have an image (screenie below is just a section of it) it's currently 2048*2048 but needs to be 1024*1024. Problem is the bicubic sampling in photoshop blurs/interpolates the lines and it looks shit. Nearest neighbor also does a pretty poor job. What other options do I have? I wanna try and keep those nice sharp lines:

I've found a solution which produces a better result than bicubic - for what I'm after anyway. I used XnView which has 9 different sampling methods on offer when you resize an image. 'Hermite' sampling did the magic for me

If anyone has got any other suggestions though please post um up cus the result is far from perfect.

Depending on the version of photoshop you can also try bicubic sharper. Or after you use bicubic you can try the unsharp mask filter.

And don't create something with 1-pixel lines if you're going to downsize it

When I work on really low-res textures (256 down to 128 ), I use bilinear instead of bicubic; it's noticeably sharper and you don't lose as much detail.
