Hehe at first I would say LUCKY YOU! Because gizmoless transformation is indeed kindof cool. For organics it is extremely useful, someone made me a script for that a long time ago (switching to screen mode at the same time) and I still use it today.
Anyways. I would say, go to the keyboard shortcut editor and reassign the toggle gizmo fonction to whatever. It might be as simple as that?
There's actually another toggle for the gizmo somewhere. In view, or viewport settings or whatever. I remember freaking out a coworker back when I was using Max for the first time, because I'd done it the non-traditional way
edit: I think this way actually removes it entirely, rather than just 'lock' it so it becomes a few red lines. SI can't check where it is right now, though
I know I had to reinstall max a while back cause of a similar problem, I'm sure it's just some toggle somewhere, but couldn't for the life of me find where...
Hey Pior, care to share that max script? I have one for maya I use alot (I think you requested it from Gilles too, heh), and I'd like to have something similar for max, as I use screen mode transform alot.
And if you haven't already, reboot.
If that doesn't, rename 3dsmax.ini to something else (like 3dsmax.ini.bak, or just 3dsmax.bak) and see if that fixes it.

import.
if that didn't fix it you still have the backup saved and i have no clue.

okay, it's not "x"? well then!
Reset Xform?
Centered Pivot? 0,0,0?
Reopen the Scene?
Restart teh Max?
Export, Import typically tends to fix weird shit like this.
good luck.

That's what X toggles.

X button can suck it.
You're not the first to have been confused by the multiple toggles, I've had it happen.
ewww, use .obj instead. .3ds is the ass cakes.
