I would have recommended an entirely different camera but up to you. Film cameras don't run out of batteries and give you a better insight into what's worth shooting, and what's not. Nice big SLR - no-one would steal it and you could use it as a weapon.
I'm planning to walk Japan this summer, so this thread is really interesting for me! (although Japan is more geared up for pilgrimages)
thanks rawkstar for the in-depth information . I'm currently looking into the European walking roads. (particularly the E1). and yeah, i don't want to go too crazy in the climbing thing. i do love climbing trees etc. but doing that with a huge mountain on your own seems kindof stupid :P.
xysdf: i will!
arrangemonk: thanks i'll see if that's on my route.
hawken: i wanted to keep it light and pocketable.. i wasn't too sure what i wanted but now that i've bought it i'm happy with it . cool! walking ftw!
I hiked some of these routes as well, but make sure you always wear as much stuff as possible, and if you have wet socks, bind them around your wrists so they dry faster.
change clothes often and ask people if they can wash stuff for you.
last summer we had good luck asking for a sleep place at monasteries. it's fricking cold atm and you want to stay in houses as much as possible over nights. don't know your exact walking route but if you are in germany you may post in your blog how to contact you. maybe i can ask some friends to open doors
Wow, I can't believe your leaving tomorrow, the time since your first post flew by. Is there some sort of satellite phone or something you can get in case of emergency? Good luck!

lol a sat phone? We have twice as many people living in Europe compared to the US, on a continent that is 1/3rd(probably 1/6th if you dont count russia) the size... there is a mobile signal almost everywhere, but im pretty sure he won't be climbing the mont blanc or anything
[edit] sorry for sounding like a douche, I know you were just being nice but its a pretty funny statement
Anyway, good luck on the trip! Im definately following your blog, planning the same kind of trip with 2 friends of mine with a mountainbike this summer so Im curious to what you'll find on your way!
Hey Polycounters! Im currently in Germany, and my keyboard keeps replacing y with z but I'm doing fine! I just uploaded a load of pictures, and some reference pictures as well. don't know if they'll be usefull to some though.
Kind regards,
Ilja
Good to see that so many people are so welcoming for you to stay on their land and even going as far as to offer you a room indoors. I don't think you'd find that as much here in the States.
Maybe too late already but if you come past Cologne I could offer you shelter for a night and a shower (actually shower first ).
Oh and btw, I have the same walking boots... but mine have been used more already (but will end up beeing used less by the end of your trip ).
Edit: ahh I just saw your planned route... no Cologne then most likely. Just don't die of bordom in the Münsterland
But I envy you... I have done similar things in the past (well not quite as long, max about 2 months), but currently I am lucky if I find the time to read polycount
Be sure to check http://wiki.stealthiswiki.org/wiki/Table_of_Contents if you need to do quick research, I think someone linked it in #md a while back. Anyway, I'm sure you're set, sounds like an awesome trip, best of luck out there, enjoy the journey.
Nice blog. I want to do this someday myself, but doubt I'd have the balls. Kudos.
I've been following his blog. I really like what he's doing and so far things seem to be going well for him. A rough spot when cooking with creek water but he bounced right back. I'm surprised at how many amazing people just open their home to a stranger.
funny I was thinking how he was doing today as well when I was painting a diffuse for this character that was very painterly. hope the bugger is doing ok
I spoke to a nice english speaking man, and later on some guy of around 35 or so. He was just asking the regular questions and I tried to awnser in Italian and it was all right, and then after I walked on he came after me and suddenly asked: "Do you want to do sex with me?" ehm... no. Later on I thought I should have said: "Tempting, but no!" (go watch Willow now!).
dunno, if you are still reading this thread, but i can offer you a place to sleep in kaiserslautern, germany.
on couchsurfing: http://www.couchsurfing.org/people/lefix/
lefix, he's in italy by now the poor guy went 2 kilometers left of my house and ended up in the next town which was one of those posts "it sucked there" yeah still reading the blog although it seems germany and north switzerland were the friendlier parts of the journey...
Lol, that kind of sounds like one of these people: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmEp97yQcRQ[/ame]
He's already in Italy, meaning he probably passed the alps a week ago :P Also, the alps probably aren't as big as you seem to think :P
i saw he's in italy. but i'm guessing he still has to get back home some day. dunno about his plans on how to get back home, since i didnt read everything yet. but if he's not flying back he will probably pass somewhere through here
Lol, that kind of sounds like one of these people:
haha, yea i saw this. im not THAT ignorant. I didnt know he was already in italy. He should ride a segway back. or a bear with dolphins with lasers attached to its head.

Youre right, I was kind of overreacting, it's a bad habit of mine Sorry dude
Hahah I love you guys!
I'm going to start writing the next update now, when I arrive back home (in about a month or so) I'll post all the texture pictures here, and some nice ones as well. Thanks for caring .
oh, and I don't really know how I'm going back yet, maybe airplane, maybe train or maybe, if it's not too dangerous hitchhiking . (I still have time left).
Lots of amazing photos so far, can't wait to see what else you've gathered
Have you thought about putting it all together as a slide show with some text? I know I've walked away from some of the photos thinking what in the hell is the story behind that... of course you might not have been able to stop and ask around.
Awesome man. Love your adventurer's spirit. People are so ready to get into the working world that they miss opportunities like this. Good on ya.
Im leaving for Amsterdam on sat, then Rome a week later, although by plane, so i'll be thinking of your hike as im peeking out the window. Best of luck to ya.
Oh, any recommended sights in either of those locations?
He should be there now!!! Wondering when he will post the last update, maybe he fainted from the terrible roman gasses(seriously, rome smells like 100 year old shit)? http://mytriptorome.blogspot.com/

edit: you should mark places with footwear stores in your map, wrong shoes will mess up your feet within hours
