I`ve been looking for a job, during 2month, I`ve applied many companies. But, any company didn`t want to hire me. I`m really frustrated. Probably I can`t see their needs. If you can give a critic, it would be great.
* it`s insomniac art test. Like other company, they said, 'Thanks, but No.' lol
Some of your stuff is really cool, especially the wrench and the tree I really dig. The rest shows potential, but many things look a bit sloppy, with visible seams and some rough textures in many places. The piece above looks cool, but the first thing that strikes me is that the fluorescent lights don't actually seem to light up anything, there are big seams where the two wall types meet, and the main prop seems to have a few baking/normal isses on the very top and bottom edges. It also looks like the whole thing is floating a bit, looking at the bottom corners of the room.
You do have some really sick stuff man. I think if you made some tweaks to those things Rasmus pointed out, it would help out quite a bit. Also one thing I noticed is some of the lighting feels a bit washed out. The piece you posted is a pretty good example. If you tweaked your light setup it would really set a mood and help out your textures. But dont give up the fight and get frustrated...you'll make it, just keep on truckin' ;-)
I just saw this post on here and figured I would take a look. I normally always look for talent being which that our studio is currently hiring at the moment. I looked through your stuff, and thought, "Wow, I will go into the studio right now and talk with my art director and get this artist a test for our prop artist position." Turns out that the wrench and the tree are the test that we are currently giving out...lol. Have you heard anything back from them, and if so, what did they say. We get over 200 apps a week for the position. So if you have not heard anything back...its because we are busy....really busy...lol
Uh, no~? Pictures are wayyy better then demo reels mate. They take less time to load and you can show them to anyone and save them anywhere without worrying about file size.
Unless you applying for something in the movie industry, then maybe.

Can't agree more. I find demo reels to be annoying personally.
Your stuff is on track man, you just gotta keep on truck'n! I don't think there is a whole lot of jobs right now, seems to be a lot more lay-offs lately.
I would keep on making better stuff, keep challenging your self, and improving your portfolio, someone is bound to bite sooner or later.
Also, English is probably not your main language but there's tons of spelling errors on the images, but awesome stuff, it's just a harsh job market right now.
Damn fine porfolio you have there. I did the Carbine Studios art test too. They're not too far from me here in OC. I kNOW why they didn't hire me but I don't understand why they wouldn't hire you? Your art test looks way better than mine. If you've only been looking for a job for 2 months, don't get discouraged! Many game artists have been looking for years, including myself. And I have had been told "thanks but no thanks" dozens of times. (I'm starting to lose count)
Just keep going, don't give up! Keep developing your skills and I'm sure you'll get hired soon. It's hard and very competitive, especially now that tons of game developers have been laid off and are applying for the same positions game students are applying for. Stay positive and good luck! Your work is inspiring.
I like your work,..I don't really know why you aren't getting any offers??
Just keep sending it out. Maybe try using a game recruiter? I once got a job through Digital Artist Management. They get a finders fee for placing you which in turn will take a bite out of your salary, but in light of the economy I'd say it's worth it. Allison Pratt (DAM) got me a job at Sony. I know alot of people that she has found work for. Tell her I sent you if you decide to contact her. She's very cute and easy on the eyes.
your online portfolio is broken and unuseable in Opera (perhaps in some other html conform browsers as well) - well and it makes a bad impression on me. I had to launch bloated firefox for this because it did of course worked there.
also publising under a website as flicker give it a bit of a hobbyist feeling ( just like people using powerpoint/word because they dont know a propper tool that might be more professional for the task). If you want to stick out as a professional artist having a own website these days is a must - a blog or photoblog like flicker is not a real option mainly because:
- no space or option to add resume, contact details, big name,...
- irritation of content _> whos content is this,- does it belong to XYZ-provider.com or is it yours.
- to long url - once that can not be memorized. Or one that confuses because of the company url.com infront of it
- not the ability to save the images for reference and backtracking once to you. Sometimes saving images is better as bookmarking a odd url with a odd interface.
content:
- to many pictures of the same with hardly any camera angle changes
- some of the texture work looks good but there is to less variety (I almost count 2 styles)
- little selection of content
- no drawings, concept or 2d skills showed. The door looks very similar to the ones from doom 3. If you designed single objects yourself try to show related concept work - that way you show that you are not just a work monkey
I like the Jugendstil architecture - to bad the game screenshots are fairly bad quality wise - some renders with less blooming and jerkiness would be nice (I know its a UE3 thingy but its not always so nice),
There are some good pointers from people and it's never a bad idea to make your portfolio better, but honestly, I don't think thats the problem. Just keep working on it and sending it more. You may also want to ask for feedback if you get a negative answer to find out where is the problem. Everybody knows it's a harder time now, even for the game industry.
I'm kind of in the same situation actually. At the moment I'm freelancing, but especially this year it has been a lot harder to find work than before. I have started to build new work samples and to look for a stable job.
Personally, I think this is some great work, and your portfolio is very inspiring! I like the Flickr presentation method your using as well, it surprised me how nice it is for showing all your work (it kept me intrigued, and I did not have to click thru everything).
rasmus/ I`m happy to hear that, the wrench and tree are my latest work. This means I`m doing better than before! And thank you for pointing out my mistakes. I should`ve fixed that thing before turning in. It was Insomniac games art test. NyneDown/ Thank you for your help, light setup is always hard to me. Yesterday, I gave up searching jobs, because nobody critic me, my coworkers said just keep try it, and no company didn`t give me a tip that why my work is not good. you know, when I work alone I easily can`t see my work the way others might see it. So, isn`t that what we`re all here for? J tadpole3159/ Thank you, I didn`t know that. I should think about that. JasonLavoie/ I like your work, it`s really great. It inspires me! thanks! Spug/ Well, Thank you for your kind words, but they said no., I know tons of candidates, much better than me, who applied for your team because your studio is awesome JI`m dying to be one of your team members, but, how can I do that, monster talented people are everywhere! lol I`ll say to them, hey, don`t apply to junior position! whats_true/ I worked at only a game company, and I really love making games. I didn`t apply to the movie industry. Thanks though..
Cojax You are right; many people laid-off these days. Obviously, it isn`t a great time to look for a job. What can I say, there`s nothing to do but I should make my portfolio better Dekard
Yes, You`re definitely right. When I was just a little junior artist, my bosses were worked at the Epic games before. There wasn`t big problem to work with them in English. Speaking is hard but, most time they spoke clearly, I understood what they said. So I didn`t know how my English is sucks.
However, Even though I`ve been in the USA for 5 months, I feel my English is worse than before. What have I done lol Maybe 5 years from now, I could be better..:(
I should`ve asked to my native American friends to correct sentences.
Wow, same as me, they always said No. I stopped counting anymore.
Good luck to you, too some day we can meet at the great company! misterboogie Wow, good for you. I heard about the recruiter, I don`t know how I get in contact with a good recruiter. I hope I can talk with her. here`s my email. soneyhan@gmail.com renderhjs
People who live in Asia said, the link is too slow, but I really didn`t know that is broken. I should make my own website. The door is from an art test at insomniac games. I`m trying to make that like Resistance2`s mood. your critic is very detail, it helped me a lot. Thank you for your help.
I love your website. my best friend`s name is Sora, too.:)
Thriller TheaterYou know, Your kind word makes me feel better. I think now is a good time to hybridize your skills on top of modeling, it will be sure to open up more doors.
