Hello all fellow polycounters!

Many of you who had met me during the Seattle polycount meet up might remember my ramblings of what im about to explain.

Historically many of the great master artists worked in small tight workshop niche's often referred to as ateliers, roughly translated it is a studio that teaches classical realist drawing, painting and sculpture. Mainly the essentials of art. The ateliers were usually ran by 1 or 2 chapter masters. Essentially a mentor to study under and excel over.

As 3d artists even though we have a array of technology we must learn each day we still can not use that as a crutch to excuse the absence of understanding the principles of true art.

So back home when I was living in Florida. I was part of a small workshop , mostly students and 1 or 2 professionals , in a short 5 month period I went from never really drawing a day in my life to doing constant life drawings to understanding form and value (granted I have a long way to go but hear me out)Those who live in the Washington area know that there many professionals who work with one another and are understanding of each others skills and weaknesses.

So I propouse to the polycount community, the washington (seattle branch)

"Poly-Telier"

I offer to any individual(s) who strives to become a serious artist and wish to excel in classical teachings. Where you have a workshop, where you are allowed to come study, learn , and mentor under other professionals in the Seattle Washington area.

Now I understand that many people have differences in opinion of the understanding of art.
But I am offering the "Poly-Telier" alternative where your teachings will go both for a understanding of traditional and 3 dimensional artwork together in unsent.

So Understand what I am offering before you decide to even commit to this! This will be made for individuals who are relentless and want to improve which means everyone will start off on a clean slate (no matter how much more talented in one area or another a person is in, everyone starts with square one to build the fundamentals and build in a layer system of art, As it should be!)

So After my long winded tale, I ask polycount.

Who is willing to be part of the Poly-Telier?

(you may Pm me privately if you wish to keep quiet about this)

I dont think this is a bad idea in theroy, but it seems too open ended in todays society... it might work better in terms of some large 4 day weekend seudo-LAN party that has some kind of goal. Like a bunch get together, in a house that can support as many rigs, for a long 4day weekend with the purpose of finishing a level, a character, a few mobs and some animation or something similar. As people take small breaks from their own work, they can stroll around the room and see what others are doing and learn quasi-how you describe below.

BUT, Im sure people who work in the industry do this already every day and dont need to board up in a house with a bunch of smell-crazy hair nastys in order to push their work forward. Sounds fun to me though.

Concepts and as much prelim work done ahead of time as possible, then a 4 day bender.

I would easily come down from Vancouver for something like that if I was able to join in.

well not to be mistaken but these are classical teachings and principles so the 3d will be very minor in this training and its not so much a demo but more like a workshop

Why not just go to sketchgroups? And traditional art meetups? I'm sure there are plenty in seattle. No reason to try and reinvent the wheel. It's definitely a good idea to be around other artists, but why bother organizing it yourself? :p

There ought to be a good few life drawing evening classes around where you are. Most local colleges or unis will run one.

When I worked at Humongous we had a life drawing class every Thursday, it was great. I learned a lot. I think life drawing and getting together with other artists is a vanishing practice. I think it works great, if you can make the time. But with peoples schedules and family its going to be hard to get everyone's to match up, that's probably why its a vanishing practice... Sup and talon have good points why bother organizing it when there's probably something already going?

I started a group similar to this in Dallas and it has helped the Dallas art community grow so much in just 2 years. Its very good to meet up with other artist and expand and learn new skills.

Would need a little more specifics on the workshop, but count me in if you're really planning on this. ^^

well essentially theres more to this then just "drawing" theres alot of principles of art that no life drawing lab can really offer (im talking about form, sculpture, lighting understanding) maybe some of the life drawing labs around here offer this but I dont know for a fact

what Im offering on the other hand is just a small environment, at most 10 people in total, a place where people can learn and grow off one another , not another place where "learn on your own or off one or 2 people" but a actual workshop where everyone is equal and everyone has the same opportunity.

anyway like I said Im not reinventing the wheel but what I am doing is offering more people in the polycount community a chance to really get serious and focused with one another in the Washington area.

If your really interested in this you can pm me and I can discuss everything in greater deatil.

I think this is a really good idea, seforin, and am always supportive of community initiatives like this. The best suggestion I can give is, just do it- one person, two people, whatever. Do it, and as long as you believe in it, keep doing it. And when you get tired of it and don't believe as strongly, keep doing it- because pushing this sort of thing is not easy and you will want to quit when it doesn't get enough support. But keep doing it, because you believed in it and it was a good idea. Keep doing it and doing it well and before you know it you will have done something awesome.

I know you are a persistent individual so if you put yourself behind this you'll achieve something after some period of time. I would just try to detach it less from a class-based setting where it relies on continued participation of the same people and do something more accessible and freeform. You will have a hard time finding people as committed to your own projects as yourself.

    Good luck.

Rob : you know I stand strongly behind anything I believe ,Im stubborn resultant with things I believe, and I was apart of something like this before, and I will gladly stand by something like this again.

This is the path of a true artist and I want any who are willing to except the challenge with me to gladly stand by my side with this!

*puts on street fighter, ryu headband*

I already have a few potential people interested in this, and even if its just 2 or 3, its better then none I say!
