Alright, so I figure instead of continuing to clog up other threads with my rambling questions, I should just clog up my own. So here it is.
I don't do much high to low poly baking at work, and figure I need the practice, so I'm starting to work on a WWII era (maybe a little earlier?) flying boat/gunship.
I'm pretty much just working out my high poly/flow so far. And we're in crunch right now, so updates will be slow.
The question I have now is, should the engine housing be a separate floating object? or should it be modeled into the wing? (both on high poly and low) I can see advantages and disadvantages to both.
ETA: Started attaching them and I'm liking the results so far, so hopefully that's the right move.

I know that when working on this stuff, anything other than quads is bad, and makes your smoothed model look like shit. Sometimes, I have no idea how to work things into reasonable quads though. For instance:
Now, when I turbosmooth this, it actually doesn't look that bad to me:
But when I turn on wireframes, there is obviously something very wrong:
Is that due to the above issue of not knowing where to lead those edges? Or is there something else fundamentally wrong with my current set up?

sometimes ngons on non-flat surfaces can be hard to solve, so by cutting these places you move the ngon to a rigid flat surface where it can do no harm.
quads are neat and make certain tools like ring select/connect more predictable, but in the end the smooth result is all that matters, and in this case the smooth result looks fine to me

Kurt that's a cool idea, but I went with Ancieto's and it seems to be working well enough for now. Hopefully I'll have time to work on this more this weekend, and can post a little more later.
Thanks again guys.
SWEET ART!
Holy Crap Dolemite! You're the only one that knows wtf it is!?
The rest of you are morons! :P

ETA: Oh, but thanks for all the positive feedback. I went a little crazy on this, hopefully I'll be able to maintain some of it in the eventual low poly. . . we'll see.
ETA2: Ya, Shep, I love Porco Rosso too. This is kind of inspired by that, but using more of a Sunderland Flying Boat/B-24/B-17 realistic gunship look.
It's good art! I was feeling inclined to do some hi poly WW2 airplanes recently, this is inspirational.
I've always loved the Sunderland Flying boats, but really have a soft spot for the Gumman Goose. Gumman had some pretty awesome and wild designs. the F2F, FF/SF and the J2f were pretty amazing.
Always dreamed of owning a Goose some day... some day...
The goose is definitely a cool plane. I love awkward looking things that don't look like they should be able to do what they do. Even the Catalina is pretty fugly in it's own right.
YOU DON'T KNOW PLANES!!!!!!
Kick-ass high-poly, the screen grab does it more justice because you can see all the detail.
tail spin was great had an excellent little game of it for the game gear(actually was probably shit but never mind)
yeah good choices with the sunderland, good stocky looking design, the catalina was one of my favs aswell but what do i know i thought it was a turbine too
