Ive been looking into terrain as well lately, however I use max. I took a look at your site and it appears you are interested in game design, so I will say this about terrain. From what I know its mainly done in engine I think. Like BSP. Well when dealing with Ued this is for sure.
Also, this is again for max, but I assume that maya also has vector color masking. Also this will give you the general theroy about terrain texturing... so look at this and make appropriate searches using the corresponding maya terms i guess... This is commonly how terrain is textured I guess
Study geology and level design, please. You need to marry these two domains, which is not easy, and I am tired of seeing games that show zero understanding of either.
Terrain can be meshed and textured with an endless variety of systems - how you make it for the game depends entirely on how the game will use it. If you are just going to render it in Maya, a displacement approach is probably easiest.
