This is a scene in Maya that I started working on a while back. I'm trying to focus more on texturing and lighting, going for a old, creepy look. Advice?
Yeah I agree, it's wayyy to dark. definitely need to let those lights light stuff. If you want a creepy look you could have one or two of the light broken so you have pools of dark areas.
I didn't know you can have solid colors for lights. The thing is it will look much better if you put some gradients in there instead of one solid color.
And yes start putting in actual lights in there, it is way too dark to make out the rest of the scene.
lights generate light, yet yours don't? something to think about right there.
lol, yes I know. I'm trying to figure out how to use a volume light so as to create that really nice glow, without having to use default maya glow (usually found under the shaders 'special effects' tab).
Here are some updates. I got the volume lights to work, but I think the rest of the scene may need more tweaking (specularity-wise). And yes, the light fixtures are too bright...
Your textures are too dark and will never be able to be lit. When the lighting is multiplied on top of them, all you can get is full bright (100 %) of your original texels. They will never go any brighter than what you made them.
Also, having everything too dark like that kills your shadows because they can't really stand out.

thats a very good way of keeping production costs down ;-)
