A Boat And Sackboy

Hey all,

Just wanted to show u guys some new stuff I have been working on for my portfolio. I am trying to get some decent enviro/prop stuff done like u all suggested.

I have been working on this inflatable boat for a little while now. I am still working on the textures and I haven't done anything to the spec map yet. I wanted to see if you guys had any crits for me ? It is 4770 Tris currently, and I have 2 sets of 1k maps. I know the wood seats don't seem too typical but I did have a ref. with one like that, and I didn't want everything to be black and yellow.

The sackboy was something I made for one of the mini comps and gameartisans.

Thanks!

    also is the boat for sale? it looks like it's been used a lot but someone tried their best to clean it up :)

    I love the Sacboy indy and the boat is looking pretty nice also. I would suggest that you take the 2 bolts that look like they are modeled on the engine support plate and bake them into the normal map since they are in a spot that you wont really spend much time looking at, and take those polys that you gain and put them into smoothing out at least that front angle on the rope where it gets ready to cross the nose of the boat. Is that gas can feeding right into the motor? If so I would assume that can would need to be held in place so it dosnt slide around and disconnect from the motor, so maybe add a bungie cord in there holding it to the side or something. And I would also suggest that you paint in a darker shadow on the floor of the boat that is cast by the gass can, because as it is right now it dose not look grounded. Keep going though its looking good :).

    Thanks for the comments so far!

    The stuff on his machete are cobwebs, from rummaging through a cave or something :).

    About the boat being cleaned up, do you guys mean I should grime up the yellow a bit more ?

    @nrek - lots of useful tips thanks man!

    let me clarify.

    I think the boat is fine as is. it's a boat... but that's also it. if you want to take it further you'd need to add some kind of story to the boat. right now it looks clean but used so I'd say it's a used boat for sale. if you want to show that it is in fact being used right now then you might want to show signs of it having been submerged in water for a long time. now.. this might be an overkill for a game cause usually you wouldn't see under the boat anyway. so it also depends on what you want to do with this piece :) (uuh, and these kind of boats are sometimes picked up as soon as they have been used so.. ya)

    maybe the story of the boat is that its owned by a really tidy person..

    with the boat maybe try fading the rubber and wood on the top surfaces as though its had a bit of UV light ageing. also the floor looks really boring what about painting in a few of ribs in there to spice things up

    edit- also remove the indent on the engine holding bracket and let the norm do the work, the shading will look better and you could spend a few more polys smoothing out the curve of the front of the boat

    Ok ok, im gonna take off the stain lol.. i thought it kinda looked good for a water stain/damage. I guess i should have just made my own.

    @kawe - Thanks for clarifying.
    @vj_box - Yea here it is at the moment.
    @SHEPEIRO - Thanks, you made some good points that I will make use of!

    The base of that boat looks a lot like card board. Would consider chaining or intensifying the saturation.

    @ ThatDon - Thanks man!
    @ whats_true - Thanks for the tip, im going to see if i can come up with something better.

    Ok here is a small update on the boat. I faded the rubber and seats, and added the bolts and the indent on the engine holding bracket into the normal map, then I used some of those poly to smooth out the rope in the front. I added a better shadow under the gas can to ground that better, and I also added two ropes that are holding it in place.

    Lots of great crits I'm still trying to tweak some things and spruce it up so if you guys have anymore for me, lemme know!

    Thanks!

    if this is every going to be animated at all.... the AO under the gasoline talk would be a problem if it moved (although i see it's tied down) i think the bottom of the craft looks a bit like a weird wood/cardboard hybrid so maybe do something with that...
