Thank god, the world is once again safe for the recording artist. Just imagine how much money they were losing off all those kids using their songs for anime montages on youtube.
Could be bad, for sure. Although like some of you guys, the first thing I think of are all those douche-made anime montages listed as 'trailers' and 'music videos'.
Don't think so. Lots of people are actually submitting their own music in many genres under creative commons license. For reel purposes, it's not hard to find litigation-free soundtrack anymore.
Can't blame youtube too, turning stricter with copyright, since they now have a "partnership" program going on where they split ad revenues with users.
I'm more of a YouPorn connaisseur, myself.. :poly136:
Anyways.. are they doing this whole muting business without first receiving a DMCA takedown notice? If so, that's pretty naff. If they're doing this after having received a DMCA notice, then I suppose it's a bit better than removing the video completely.
However it's going down this whole copyright thing needs to be revised, along with fair use, and the huge media companies need to loosen up a bit or the people they step on will stop consuming their stuff just out of spite, to make a point.
In some ways. Thank god.. Some of the items they choose too add the music suxsored. I wouldn't want my *music backing up some low bar things I have seen.
That's a little extreme(ly ridiculous) but people have been abusing youtube since day 1 with posting copyrighted content... now homemade music videos and musical montages are fine by me, I rather enjoy a lot of them, but when people start posting tv shows or anime or movies and then bitching when they get removed... you kinda have to wonder how stupid these people are... the site is called 'youtube' It's for posting stuff YOU made... not 'this is a free video streaming site for your pirated contenttube'

Links please.
Will they mute the music if you don't credit the artist at the end? Because surely then they wouldn't know if it wasn't your music. I can see this being really bad for animators with lip-synch in their reel...maybe I could get away with suing Youtube over lost work
I'm fine without the lame fan videos (anime). As long as they don't remove vids from those who record their own takes of the songs. Some of these are awesome.
Did you contact them about that? I remember when the "no video game" rule came into effect because Vimeo was flooded with strategy guide videos and the such
They took down a Mars Volta guitar cover I did awhile back. Extremely lame. And I don't get why mine got singled out, I've seen a ton of other covers. Only thing I could think of was cause I had a really good mix going for the sound quality. But do they really have people that go through each video checking for that? godamn
Youtube is probably gearing up to be profitable, I've heard rumors that the Web2.0 bubble is about to burst.
Perhaps Youtube could have a premium subscription were you pay a monthly fee and part of that goes to ASCAP (that's right, if you publicly cover a song you have to pay ASCAP)
also, I lulz at "we need stronger copyright laws to protect our arts!" then "oh noes these stronger copyright laws are biting back!"
I always wondered how a site such as youtube can run with the bandwidth it must consume, a profitable model using premium subscription could work. I think vimeo already run something similar like that.
I don't see how it's equivalent unless somebody is making money off those youtube videos.
It's quite simple (From their standpoint): Whenever someone sees something of theirs for free, it means that they lost a sale Thats how it is, in that little mmorpg-vs-irl world they live in.

I think this is all getting out of hand these days.

thats wat i think at least
either way, i still think its a bad move by youtube... just another one for the large list of theirs
one of my friends had his video removed. it was a bunch of amazing football goals with some rock song in the back.

*If I were a musician that is.
ohhh, good point... I'm now very much in favor of this
(like they had any point, but call me when putting Dust in the Wind to some resident evil footage ever has meaning)
Does it also apply to game videos that have music in them from the game? What about licensed material such as the soundtrack of the later GTA games?

Youtube wasn't great for music until you added "&fmt=18" to the end of URLs for HQ stereo sound.
Don't switch to Vimeo. They actively remove "game" videos. Even if you created the game yourself.
I find that hard to beleive for some reason, videos of indie projects is what first lead me to discover Vimeo. Where did you hear/read this?
for instance, Off-Road Velociraptor Safari

darn can't quote myself, that would of been awfully witty... instead I double post
OH NOES!
Just saw advertisements on the right side of the page when doing a search, so yes, youtube is making money from their videos
