just finished that one for my indie game project .. thinking about weapons and vehicles...
armor plates, helmet, goggles and backpack can be switched inside game to make different options

So im assuming you used the same texture for each of the weapons?
this is great if you are trying to get an insane amount of objects/enemies/events on screen at any one time, but is painfully obvious.
