[Portfolio] Heber Alvarado - Character Art

*UPDATED 1/14/11 on last page*

Hello,
My name is Heber, I am an artist from Vancouver B.C.
I thought it was a good time to introduce myself and start posting some work and being more active on this forum.
Anyhow my portfolio can be seen at :
http://www.heberalvarado.com/

This is the latest character that i started over the holidays, hes still very rough in places but a new set of eyes would help at this point.
Going to pose this guy up and texture it if i get a chance,

Description:
Its basically a warhammer character (chaos marauder class) which is a character that is brute and powerful and fights mainly with a handheld metal weapon but also has a mutated limb or is able to turn its skin into metal/plating to further protect itself. It was heavily inspired by all the great warhammer concept art i found online.

Btw great forum guys!

Welcome heber, nice folio, really nice sculpts.

Focussing on the marauder, I have no idea if this is based on any pre excisting concept, but the only thing that throws me off is his tiny hand. It just looks out of place to me.

But perhaps there's a reason for it (aside from aesthetics) maybe it'll hold a bunch of muscles/sinews that controls the big lobster/squid claw.

Personally I'd rather see it more incorporated/melted into the claw.
Anyway purely personal taste ofc, otherwise looking solid :D

thanks for the quick replies guys,
microneezia: thanks a few people have told me it buggers up on their pc as well, i gotta figure out another solution i think maybe like you said going full blog style.

pestibug: its not from any particular concept i just pieced it up as i went along , thanks for your feedback the more i look at it the more it bugs me as well i wanted it to stand out away rfom the claw so i didnt melt it in more but i think im going to repose it and have it gripping around the claw. cheers.

Gavin: thanks, glad you like it ..finally time i came on here (been lazy) hope all is well for you.

The hand should be inside, at the center back, inside the claw. Like have an octo-mouth sporta opening inside, then his hand nested inside there. This way, he opens the claw, his hand grabs the thing he wants to claw-bite, holds it steady, maybe give the thing a wrap around his wrist for tight grip, ... and then... ClawSmash! His hand is of course nested inside some nice fleshy bits at the back of the claw not getting in the way of the smash.

Afterwards he can have a nice snack with the part he has a hold of and left over inside the claw?

Hey Heber, its a good start as I dig the choice of subject matter.

Ok some crits, the mandible needs more volume, obviously he doesn't have lips but you need to increase the length of the jaw to avoid him looking child like and fragile.
I like the glove, there is subtle tension across the fabric but I think the pants need work. The folds and tension points feel quite arbitrary and you need should spend some time working on this.

I think the muscles across the side of the chest and ribcage need attention, serratas anterior muscle transition to the obliques reads badly and since he's bare chested I think its worth the effort.

Glad to see you posting here and day hello to pum ;)

Hey Heber, nice to see ya around man :-) Your portfolio looks stellar as usual and your wip is coming along nicely. One thing that really jars my eye is the pants but I'm sure you'll work that out. Hope all is well dude...keep it up.

Hey man, I really like your portfolio! I book marked it as soon as I saw just one of you models.

As for the WIP here, it looks pretty cool and I like the idea. I would do something more interesting with the chin area if that is all that will show on his face. Also, what is the scale of this guy? Right now I see these skulls on his belt that look tiny. Like he's collecting squirrel skulls or something. Anyways, I realize that this is still in the works so you were probably going to do something about the stuff I mentioned anyways, but these are the main issues I see ATM.

Anyways, great portfolio, and I look forward to seeing this character develop.

[Edit] Aww man, that is sooo cool you got a 3d print of a few of your models... I'm so jelous.

    Fabulous work Heber.

It's not a surprise your works are featured on Gonomon.

Would be great to see more creatures from you as well.

    Cheers.

thanks guys for all the comments!,
spacemonkey : thanks a lot tim! i will work on those things you pointed out as now that you mention them they seem really wrong to me now too , thanks!
johnyraptor : agreed, scaling that down right.
bradmyers: thanks for the feedback , i agree about the chin area but the skulls are tough ill see if i can scale them back to at least make him feel really tall but not giant.
    cheers,

oooo. i remember seeing your demo reel a while ago. very cool stuff.
  • glib
Very cool looking. I love the belt-sash that comes across the torso and is tied into the skin. I'd think you could continue that style up to the spikes on his right shoulder and make them look like they've been implanted a bit more (ie. long scaring from surgery, bunched up and puffy scar tissue around entry points etc). I'm also looking at the cool crest on his other bicep thinking it might look particularily badass with the same treatment (and lose the armband thats holding it). The spike coming through the shoulderplate confuses me slightly, as it is sculpted like bone, but comes through the armor cleanly. If it were made of metal and part of the plate that would make sense to me, but if it's supposed to be a piece of bone from the character himself it would be cool to see the armor modified to allow that physiology (ie. either a clean hole, done at forging, or a rough hewn section that looks like this dude has modified it himself).

    Can't wait to see more.
  • Hebs
thanks guys for the comments, glad you guys like it.
oozero: demo reel? wow that was awhile back i cant look at it without cringing now.
glib: Thanks for the feedback i like your ideas actually ill see if i can incorporate more of that stuff you mentioned into the rest of the mode. As for the shoulder spike there is a hole in the metal part of the armor but i realized you cant see it in any angle i posted.
    cheers,
  • 55joe

thanks guys!, hope to update soon working on her hair and some poses.

hazard: Id like to make her hair more like the sculpt yes, in that render it is pretty much a basic cap consisting of a few hairplanes,
