3ds max: DirectX 10 weirdness

After changing to directX 10 in configure driver and reloading max, all objects are rendered with triangular faces even when I turn it off in configure driver and reload. Also the main grid lines that cross 0,0 are missing. Anyone else have this problem?

To be honest i've no need to use directX 10 I was just fiddling around with the options. I'm using 3ds max 2009 x64 SP1 on Vista.
