I personally like polyBoost and some personal scripts but all in all I try to keep max as plain as possible as some plugins or scripts are sometimes bad written and crash max or add other annoyance stuff.
the blur scripts http://www.neilblevins.com/blurscripts/blurscripts.htm
are also well known but its often really personal stuff of them - just go through the list and install only what you really need - anything else will be forgotten by you anyway and then its making things only less sorted.
It really depends on what you do as to what scripts you'll be interested in. I can recommend a lot of scripts for animation but that probably won't do most of the people here much good...
I've tried Chuggnut's unwrap tools but I can't seem to make them work. I'm using Max 2009 could that be the problem ? I loaded the .mcr but no new categories show up.
There was no manual. There was a .mcr file which I loaded and there was the icons file. I got to load it, there is however a small problem. The menu under the UV window gets stuck after I load the tools. Here's a screen.
That's because its 6-7 years old? Besides most of the features have been rolled into 3dsmax. The only ones I can think of that have not, are the align, and space evenly. But there are tons of other scripts out there that do that without a bulky cumbersome interface... I loved chugnutts tools but, I'm afraid that ship has sailed?
Haha, good point Eric. I have a new site design in the works, with a "Scripts" section for my Max and Maya scripts, but I haven't had a chance to finalise it yet. Maybe that can be a New Year's resolution
It can have little animated GIFs and everything!
+1 recommendation to mops tools, its the best thing that happened on my switch from maya to max!
oh and draster's switcher... which you need to pay for, but so worth it if you're used to maya's viewport controls and think max's viewport controls are stupid and illogical.

Edit: nevermind, got it to work.

CrazyButcher's LCSM Unwrap pelting system is also highly recommended, as is Olivier Vandecasteele's MorphMap aligned curve-mapping script, plus Mop's Normalize UV Scale and UV Line Relax (when are you gonna link em on your site Paul?).

on a sidenote, animated gifs = win.
