fired(3).jpg

Wehlp, i got layed off today. i don't work in the game industry but i figured i'd vent anyways.
Actually 5 + people got it as well, maybe more - i didn't exactly stick around to find out who else got cut.
Spare you all the details - it feels really weird to be fired. Especially being in a senior position were i worked.

on the plus side -- i get to spend more time on my portfolio!!

Sorry to hear that man. My company has been dumping people like crazy. More recently, it appears that they are targeting people with higher seniority. We assume so they can save more money with less of a headcount reduction. Some of these guys had over 20 years :/

Be glad your out I'll spare you the details but currently where im at my boss is using my situation (being the last artist ) Over my head as leverage along with some other really nasty things that happened to me in the last year. Its really stressing me out bad.

Don't just work on new portfolio, especially for juniors as there will be more experienced people lining for work at the front of the bus. It would be more favorable pick up other skill sets (Not necessarily artist oriented)to make one more marketable to the industry.

Other than that, just a matter of exposure.

what do you mean in that matter? Like becoming more experience in shaders or more of a technical artist?

I'm thinking web programming, maybe a little database management. Companies are always looking for database administrators. I understand it's not that hard to wrap your head around, mainly just tables, and keeping track of data. Very marketable skill, especially with how common databases are becoming. A very marketable skill that shouldn't take all that much effort to acquire.

As much fun as art can be, it is commonly one of the first areas to get cut when then crunch is on. Hiring sub-par artists and paying them less will make the development cost of a game lower. Sad times, very sad times. Also, working on developing some technical skills will also make it easier to work on your own personal projects.

I think I'll be making a thread like this soon myself. and I do work at a game company. The industry is a harsh mistress sometimes.

Welcome to the laid off club!

Yeah, getting laid off sucks, but think about all the time you now have to update your portfolio, finish those games you never could, sleep in past 10 am, etc.

You'll find something eventually, I'm sure we all will.
