Max 2k9 Hanging when switching viewports

I've having an issue at work when I switch viewports with the hotkeys max hangs for 30 to 90 seconds. I'm using DirectX. Tried to use OpenGL but when I switch to that max just doesn't start after the splash. Is this a problem that requires a reinstall? I've got the latest service pack. I have none of these problems in Max9.

Have you installed SP1? It didn't fix my problem but maybe it'll fix yours. 2K9 is full of oddities that I never had a problem with before.

Yeah SP1 is installed along with all the hotfixes. The problem was there before and after all of them. Guess a reinstall is my solution.

Well, I used to get horrible performance in Max after turning "dx display of material" on bump mapped materials (using bump in standard mat instead of using a shader). It would take 10-15 seconds to take an undo step. Don't know if this helps at all...
