so it looks like something died in my motherboard or powersupply on my athlon xp 2500+...

It refused to properly power my 2.5" mobile drive, so I decided that rather than risk dataloss, work interruption or just complete failure... rather than spend time and or money trying to replace parts on an obsolete system, I pulled the trigger on a new system... 6 months earlier than I wanted because I would've liked to pay down my credit card before a new system.

But... life never seems to work out quite like you plan, so here are the stats I went out to empty my wallet for.

an intel c2q q9300 2.5 ghz cpu
evga nforce n680i ftw mobo... supports up to 3 nvidia cards in sli
evga geforce 9800 gt+ 1 gb... a factory OCed version of the 8800
2x2048 corsair xms2 dhx ddr2 800 mhz ram
corsair 750w psu

Though I'm sitting here typing this on my old system as I got the 32bit version of vista hp... when I should've gotten the 64bit version to support more ram... which means another trip to the store tomorrow.

I look forward to playing with modern 3d game engines and 3dsmax....

too many things to do... not enough hours in the day... hopefully I can split my time between my pet project of running an entire animated series through preproduction and learning modern 3d... while juggling a fulltime job and 6 hours of kung fu practice a week.

let the games and sleepless nights begin >:B

I bought a refurbished DELL XPS 600 when I went away to NJ in 2006 for $650. It's still my main workstation, its been upgraded a bit though with a better video card, ram, HD. I still prefer to build my own systems, but you don't have to break the wallet if you shop around, unless you really need all that new hardware.
