Help me understand the photoshop blur tool.

I have a problem in photoshop where when I'm using the blur tool on a block of colored pixels, and near a transparent area the tool will try to blend in the transparent pixels. This makes it very hard for me to use the tool on fine edges. Obviously I'm doing something wrong. Am I using the tool incorrectly in terms of settings and so on or do I just have to be carefull not to sweep the blur tool over transparent areas?

While you've got the layer you're working on selected, click the lock transparent pixels button up top of the layer pallete. That'll stop it bleeding transparency out.

But be careful because it'll still blur to a whitish colour if you use the tool too much around the edge.

Thanks for responding so fast. I was afraid that locking the pixels wasnt fullproof. But I guess it's better than nothing.
