I guess its a semi Rant but Im just wondering if this has happened to other people

I was recently working on a character privately for myself and was really hyped about it and was testing out a few new tricks and such but just last week my boss pinned me with working on a new character, and I was applying alot of the tricks and such to the new sculpt I Was doing , boss loved it and finished it up by friday made him happy.

So fast foward to today (night) I decided to go back to my character and sculpt in some proportions and some of his facial looks

Ive spent the last 2 hours tweaking this crappy face and it looks So god awful That I just figure it be easier to start over.

I think I hit a modeling/sculpting block. This happen to any of you guys? How you deal with it when you produce something really quality one day and then cant even produce something basic the next.

Im hoping a good rest will clear all this up.

Just wondering how you lad's deal with "the block"

Oh my god you have no idea how lucky I am to hear you say that... I mean, of course I´m sorry that you have a block, but I thought I was alone!! Seriously, it was freaking me out...

I used to have a huge problem when I was modeling heads for example, and after couple days/weeks training modeling/sculpting torsos, I couldn´t make a solid head for days... Right now I´m in a good period, but when the block comes... Usually I HAVE TO take a break for a while, because I hate to see those muddy nothing-like things that come out from everything I put my hands on.

I wish you luck and power to get thru that unfortunate times, my friend.

Yeh this can happen. Go on the internet look at work and get some more references and start over yet again. I bet you can get it right in 3 tries. Try to look early at your work and see if you are on the right track. yes? save. no? start over. or start over from last good save and evaluate if you have been on the right track and can get it right the next time.:P

I did this when making some heads. But its not what i usually do so thats my noob trick.

Dont waste your time where you messed up the proportions thats why its important to early take a step back and check if stuff looks good.

just taking a guess here, but i find a lot of it is just about what emotional state you're in.

if you're feeling unconfident, uninspired, and apathetic, then you'll make garbage.

also, it could be that you just improved on some level and you're not happy with what you're making.

sometimes i get that feeling, where everything i do is shit. i just stop working and do something else. i come back when i'm in a more creative/flow state. if i know what i want to do, and what i have isn't working out, then i get reference. can't seem to get the head you want? go find it online and study it, find out what makes it the way it is. look at it and say "yes! this is what i want. what is it about this that gives me that feeling?" maybe it's the lips being a certain way. copy those lips baby!

Hmmm, as long as you could redo your old work, but better, it's not really a block is it? It seems more like progress :D

PS Seforin: I think you've improved a lot since the last time Ive seen your old work!

Happens all the time with 2d art for me. Fastest way to recover for me is to look at work I like, and see what's there that's missing from my own pieces. A day of that usually does the trick.

I don't believe in artist block, modeling block, writers block or any other creative block. There are just excuses. There's always something you can work on, if you have trouble with one, just leave it for now and work on another aspect of it. When you scrub away at one thing and it's just not turning out, you've already got tunnel vision. The only thing you can see is that spot and you're missing the bigger picture. Take a step back, work on another part of the model a bit or something completely different, it will come back.

Compare what you're doing to some of your favorite artists, start analyzing outside what you're doing a bit more and keep yourself out of the tunnel of despair.

control - new, save - no.

sometimes, you just don't got it. Its best to step back, take a break, sleep, work out, drink, chill, breathe, whatever for a few hours and or a day. Come back to it fresh.

If it still sucks and you still hate life and it, scrap it completely and start a new. Make a folder for "fuckingrejects" when you get angry at something and put it in there. Come back to it in a few weeks and or month and start the idea over from scratch.

    patience!

Sometimes reading the encouragements on Polycount would help cure the problem.

But seriously if you have a "block" then you ought to consider looking at inspirations and backtrack your progress like what has been said, helps get me back into the grind fast.

Going for a really nice long walk would help clearing your head too.

I second John_Warner's thoughts, with a sprinkle of deadline rush jobs, sometimes it turns out miracles.

I find when I make something that I really like, I try and ride that high and will force myself to try and pump out something else. It always turns out looking rubbish.
I find I do the best work when I'm not thinking about what I'm doing and just painting/modeling/sketching/sculpting for fun. Going in with the mindset of "I'm going to make the best fucking model the world has seen" doesn't quite work for me, because I just end up making the worst fucking model.
If things aren't going well, and you're having a block, don't force it. Take a step back, try something else, go for a walk, browse through your ref/inspiration folder and then come back to it.

    Good luck, mate.
