I'm using max at work for everything now and not silo

1. How do you slide an edge loop in edit poly without having to connect edges?

2. I'm having trouble sewing edges in max is it just picky or is there a tolerance setting im missing.

Thats it for now. Overall im pretty familiar with max and have been working on it in the evenings but these are bugging me right now.

1) Do you mean constrain edges to faces while you slide them around?
If you're using 2008-09 look for "Constrains" check buttons in the Edit Geometry Rollout, else its a drop down.

2) I think you're looking for bridge if you want to create new polys across a gap. Or Weld & or Target Weld to join one edge to another. I normally weld verts not edges but I think it works the same.

1) shift+x when in edit poly is the hot key for that I think. As vig said, it will let you slide edge loops around while constraining to the shape of the mesh.

2. maybe you're talking about what all you can weld together? Max goes to great lengths to make sure you don't create non-manifold geometry, unlike silo or maya, so you can only weld open edges to eachother, collapse stuff, or merge verts connected by an edge(s). Sometimes it's annoying, but this can actually be useful behavior.

You can also use CsPolyTools "csSlide" script to slide selected edge loop by moving your mouse up or down
