If I understand you correctly, then I don't believe you can. You'd want something called a 'picture tube', as it's called in Paint Shop Pro, --which Photoshop still doesn't have-- which actually allows you to use pictures of more than one colour (as ps only uses the black in brushes to paint with. The white is just transparent) as brushes, and also allows you to take multiple pictures (ie. several different scans of ink-blots for instance) and randomly select from those with each stroke, etc...
It's not a big loss, but it could be practical every now and again.
In this case, I would just put the original picture you used for the brush on a layer, and ctrl-click it to copy it around.
