how does one make an image like this in photoshop??

i don't want all the tiny little fractal detail, what i want is to have a pattern repeat around in a circle, and repeat off into the distance.

i COULD make a tiled texture and put it on the inside of a cylinder, and put a camera inside.... buut.. i'd like to do it in photoshop

Try a straight row of whatever you want to go into that shape then try polar coordinates on rectangle to spherical, it might make it bend like that. Make a few rows and try it. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. You can try running radial blur on it with the zoom option. To get the effect you want you might need to do it on separate layers. There might be a plugin for photoshop that does this.

You might need to keep the canvas square.

there's filters in ps that might do this, there's polar coordinates that will turn an image in to a circular pattern and another that can shrink and expand the centre of an image, but i can't remember it's name

You can get a fractal generator like Fractint that will generate a fractal and export it as an image you could then take into Photoshop and have your way with it.

you just made me fucking convulse. why the hell would you want to make those hurtful images? did someone cheat on you and you want to line their room with these? did your dad murder your mother? i cant think of anything someone could do that that is bad enough to warrant looking at these. /end rant

the tiling cylinder texture seems like your best bet.

play with gardients nd you will get something like this

tile it multible times and make it radial (there are more ways to achive that)
i made a sphre i max and stretched it to a radialmapped plane and so on
on the second pic i selected the center vert and turned soft selection on and rotated it
