ok, so my initial sculpt was made using arshes basemesh (i love it.)
but now that it comes to the actual normalmapping part etc, i've rebuilt the low poly mesh to the point where it no longer resembles the basemesh, and has many new/removed verticies.
is it still possible to import this new low-res mesh into zbrush and have it take advantage of the polypainted high res model i used?

If you want to preserve your polypainting, you'll have to use Col>Txr button to convert the polypainting to a texture, then export that along with a fairly high level mesh into Max/Maya/XNormal and use their baking tools to transfer the colour info. At which point you might as well bake normals there too.
