Without getting too wordy - this is a temple that was used to summon a benevolent entity that would bring with it a fuel source. Through abuse and greed the inhabitants went overboard becoming corrupt with the power that came by drawing the fuel and controlling the people with it.
The benevolent entity no longer saw this as a mutual relationship and decided to punish the inhabitants by partially destroying the temple, any time it is summoned it continues to destroy the temple and deny the inhabitants of their precious source, its rage often bleeding into the nearby roots, which have taken a life of their own infected with the fuel.
This piece reflects more the corruption and evil of the inhabitants than it does any blatant malicious intent of the entity.
