Unearthly Challenge | a.leigh | TBD

I've decided to join in on this one, and here's the concept I'm going with:

That's the basic silhouette I've got in my head. I'm going dark steampunk with this. This is the headquarters of a mad scientist who has enslaved this world with his robot army. It's not only his mansion, but it's also his chief production facility.

That's pretty much what I've got so far. This is gonna be fun.

    Quick wip shot of the house:

    I'm still blocking out the basic shape of it and adding details in as I go. The area around the gear/generator at the top is going to be all burnt out, like a lab experiment exploded up there and instead of fixing it, the guy just decided to leave it and build around it.

    Here's a little update with a prop:

    I have the whole area blocked out, and I'm about to start adding detail to the terrain, and extending it around to the sides.

    Then after that I start adding more pipes, furnaces, and all those little fun details.

    I'm back with another prop. Victorian scientific devices mixed with skeletal bits? Indeed:

    I'm thinking I may adjust the spec map once I see how it looks with the final lighting in the scene. I'm also toying with getting rid of the back wall of my environment, since I think it's overpowering everything else right now. Any crits or comments would be welcome.

    So I decided to change some stuff. The house is supposed to be the focal point, and the back of the environment was just overwhelming the scene, so it's gone. I also am re-working the house model. I'm keeping the entryway and balcony, and the burned out lab will still be in as well, but I'm scrapping the rest of it and starting over. I'm making it so the majority of it is modular. The front of it will start out looking like an old manor house, but as it goes back and upwards the factory part will take over with more pipes, smokestacks, and mechanical stuff coming out of it.
    Some wip shots. I've got all the inset gears in the front part of the roof, and I went and worked on the terrain base as well.

    Ack... haven't posted an update in a while. I've been working on it though:

    For the most part the textured stuff is just diffuse maps for now. I'm probably going to touch a few things up with them before I go ahead and do the normals and spec maps. The ground and background are really temporary at this point. I just wanted a base color down for an idea of what it would look like.

    I've learned quite a bit from doing this contest, and I'm happy that I finished and got my entry in. I'm looking forward to seeing how everyone does, as I've seen some kickass entries in the other threads. Best of luck to everyone who finished.
