Fooling around with Zsphere's here and ran into this problem below. How does zbrush decide when to combine things properly like in the shoulders...and when to just make a mess of the polys like in the crotch?

Try changing some of the options and checkbox-buttons in the Adaptive Skin rollout. Sometimes those can fix issues like this.
Also it could be that your zspheres in the hips/legs are rotated 180 degrees, I've seen that happen before too.

Similar but different:
ZSpheres are quite finicky ...I didn't know about those settings MoP. They are helpful for sure.
