Wanted to make this a 'good' concept, but my blood flows green.

3.jpg

The name might change. Currently, it translates into 'the devil,' cuz i dont know how to say 'the devil's house'. if anybody could provide a translation, i'd be greatful!

That being said, i think we all know what i'm doing with this ^

Arabian themed, dark lords throne room. I'm thinking boss battle.

fountains shooting wine, animal cages, fire, hookah. i'm sure i'll be able to get more creative as i think further

i'm going to hope that my school life is going to co-operate. i've been waiting for this for 2 months now.

Will hopefully have some 3d work in by the end of this weekend.

cheers!

I can read arabic (poorly), though I can't understand it. I'll see if I can track down a translation for you :D
Best of luck, dude. I'm really looking forward to seeing your entry for this. Your stuff has definitely come a long way from when you first made your appearance on Polycount.

thanks for the early support man!
i hope i can take another few leaps as i go through this. will definately be trying.

alrighty. i wanted to post up a few ideas i had, and i figured id put up what 3d i had done till now as well.

    gameplay
    - I'm making this for a third person action / adventure type game. Something like assassin's creed / prince of persia. there'll be some platforming elements.
    - there will be a gigantic set of doors at the 'entrance' but the player will actually be entering by a hole in the wall above it.

    art direction / level design
    - colour theme will be reds, and yellows.
    - fairly desaturated colours.
    - main material used will be sandstone and marble.
    - extensive calligraphy on the assets. i want a huge amount of detail in this level.
    - arabian themed [already stated] along the lines of palaces and castles. this implies animal cages, hookahs, huge lounge area etc
    - i want a very islamic tone to this. there'll be, in the centre, a fountain of wine. it'll be shaped like a pentagon, and at each corner, there'll be a broken pillar, each representing a broken pillar of islam
    - i'm giving this 'devil' 4 of the names of allah. i hope this isn't offensive, but many names seem like responsibilities that the devil could share. they are
    - Al-Mumit (المميت)
The Bringer of Death, The Destroyer
    - Ad-Darr (الضار)
    The Distressor, The Harmer
    - Al-Hakam (الحكم)
    The Judge
    - Al-Ba'ith (الباعث)
    The Raiser of The Dead

the calligraphic form of these names will be found through the level

    - scrolls containing names of sinners.
    - library of scrolls [the devil must be smart]

that's pretty much all i have planned for no. nothing's really set in stone.

and the 3d i have done so far is just a little support piece. its modular, and used extremely repetitively, so it is very highly detailed. i figure something that'll appear so many times, and be about thigh-height in a action/adventure game would need a good level of detail:

wow, this could be pushed into something controversial - sounds good keep it up.
  • indian_boy
yea i was actually worried about that... i have a nagging feeling inside me

personally, i think god and devil are one person, in all religions. i'm an atheist, but i believe that 'without one, the other cannot exist.' cuz there is no 'eternal good' without 'eternal evil'. plus, i dont know any calligraphic writings of the devil's name, but if anybody can suggest less controversial alternates, i'd be extremely glad.
i'm merely applying names to the guy which are what he would be in general. unfortunately, those kinda' match up with his better counterpart, which is Allah.

i'm thinkin of not doing that. but i need a good alternative that's just as symbolic.
all calligraphic writings are from al-koran anyway, so i'm up against a corner. but it can't be denied that the devil is just as 'holy' as a god. he just chose another path...

think maybe you should slow down with the detail and work on getting a good low and med freq detail for your high poly first. thing I notice about your work style is you get a lot of small details and shapes that don't neccesarilly carry over to a normal map well. getting a cool rough shape and style first and making sure its consistent thru your scene should be first priority.

I like the idea/description so this should come out looking pretty cool.
  • indian_boy
will take that into serious consideration. thanks for the suggestion man!
and i'm glad u like the idea. hope i can portray it as well as i want to.

one of the pillars i'll be using in this level. i don't quite like the ones drawn in the concept. they dont seem to 'fit' the arabian theme all that well.

this one took me a while to figure out how to do cuz it set up the colour theme and stuff for the structures. i figure i'll be going much faster now

    cheers!

    and another update:
    WIP03.jpg
pillar with the base. each side of the base has a different calligraphic 'name' on it.

now i'm off to figure out what parallax mapping is, and how to do it =D

decided i was gonna finish an arch, and then take a step back, and layout the whole level

    so that's the next step.
    laying out the whole level.
  • indian_boy
    gonna completely redo that arch
    i hate it

the seam down the centre etc. so yea, imma delete, and restart

    on another note:
    WIP05.jpg

so the brown is the marble flooring along with a carpet or two and the green is gonna be grass for his pet tigers to frolick in.
theres a huge gap behind him, which is where he watches the 'dancing girls' and smokes his hookah, and stuff
the entry is marked out. the roof is gonna be curved. also, the darker grey parts are drapery.
the second floor walls will have books and scrolls in the middle sections. otherwise, they'll be simple walls.
in the centre is a fountain of wine, with 5 broken pillars. next to it is the red dot that marks out the human size.

    yes this place is HUGE.
im thinkin pet tigers, lions, summoned enemies, and final boss.
epic battlezone in the devil's house

    cheers

    Check out this reference: http://www.pbase.com/dosseman/sivas_turkey

Your arches don't match the intricacy of the column base. When Turkish churches were built, no imagery (i.e. pictures, icons, murals etc...) was allowed by Holy doctrine.

So the builders used intricate geometry and incredible scroll work. Almost every square inch of a temple is covered in design.

    But design that works harmoniously.

So I don't think that loose brick look is working for it.

Hope that reference shows what I mean.

I think you've improved since the modular building contest, so keep it up!
  • indian_boy
    thanks for that ref there!

in my years in india and morocco, i haven't seen a place SO intricately designed. this is an eye opener for sure lol.

i'm cranking up the detail in my walls, and soon, arches.
    here's the wall, in 3ds:

here's the wall, in unreal editor:

EDIT: keep in mind the first panel [to the left, one with the different design] will either be gotten rid of, or used sparingly at certain spots]

I liked the bricks better. alot of your symbols and detail work just looks made up and not thought thru very well. alot of the patterns clash.
  • indian_boy
    really?
i dunno, i prefer this. i'll see if i can get it to work nicely, if not, i can always revert.
the tiles didnt take all that long to make lol.

here's a little mess around with the walls
not enough steam to do anything major today

    WIP11.jpg

    cheers

idk i think i like this style better then the brick. the brick with the pillers just didnt read well to me. I'd like to see this wall with the pillers in front.
  • indian_boy
damn... im up till 2 am doing school homework, i hardly have time for this competition.
managed to squeeze this out today as a break time thing
    WIP12.jpg

i'll get those arches done asap =D i hope they match up

should prolly try and do something to break this up. your going pretty huge with a very very repetative design that looks like its made up from imagination. I'm not really seeing what you're doing has to do with the concept you chose. I think if you would stick to the layout and theme of it a tad more and use some real reference you'd be on a better track.
