While working in 3d max I sometimes find that my selection tool turns into circular selection and I don't know why. I have checked the hotkey for circular selection and its blank so its not like im accidentally hitting some hotkey.
This has happened since version 7 so its not a new thing, I just havent been using max much lately.
Anyone know whats wrong?

Pressing Q consecutively while already in selection mode just toggles through the different selection modes.
ahh, thanks
for anyone else wondering; To disable it, hotkey "Select Object" as Q instead of "Smart Select"
Just remove the shortcut in Customise/Customise User Interface in Group: Main UI, Category: All Commands. It's called Smart Select.
Edit: Looks like you beat me to it.
But that will leave you without a selection hotkey. You can maxscript it pretty quickly.
EDIT:
It was pretty simple to script works like a champ!

Save the script some place (doesn't matter where) and run it once. Now under Customize User Interface > Keyboard > change the catagory to VigTools and bind StuidSelect to Q. Now select won't cycle through the modes.
No need for a script, like Yozora said you just need to change Smart Select to Select Object instead! hehe.
The script calls "max select" which is exactly what Select Object is calling, so yea no need for a script.
