The chin line on the second one bugs me to no end... Its crooked!
Daleks FTW!!!!
I still like the slight revamp they got on the show a bit more though. Just something about crabfu and daleks that just doesn't seem rite.
Wow Dave sweet 2D work. I love looking at all the different surface types in them, you've captured their characteristics very well. The machine concepts are neat, I also wish we could see more of the machine connected to that cockpit!
loving it all man, really like the colours you use. In particular I like the fish in the water, the atmospherics and design are top notch. I can definitely see a style in your design too, for some reason the 3rd one reminds me of Giger. Ofc loving that dalek, daleks
How long? The girl with a bad cold took the longest- she started as a pencil sketch in 1997, then I kept going back every now and then and painting over her. Probably two days if I added it all up.
Hatch took a day from scratch- probably 11 am through to 10pm with breaks.
Green creature took 3 hours- I had to finish it before lunch time.
Designs are roughed out and developed in an hour or so, then their surfaces are detailed in and polished. This takes the longest- most clients just want shaded sketches.
I am taking on comissions at the mo- would love it if people would pass me up to their art directors
- awesome stuff dave , you still in auz - or have you finally got tired of whinging 1st year artists :P
- i had a question if your still floating around - the last concept, is that meant to be a take on some kind of dr who dalek? if so cool, i always thought that their original weakness was shite (stairs) - but then the new dr who series made that mute by them being able to rocket away!
Heh, yeah it is. Its a paint of a sketch I did when I heard there was a new series coming out. These Daleks wouldnt fit the tone of the current show, but a much more gothic, dark, cliff hangery type show I had hoped for when I heard the announcement.
"EL-EV-ATE." Was for me the second lamest moment in sci-fi after Darth 'Frankenstein' Vaders "nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!" or perhaps rockets coming out of R2D2.
I wanted Daleks that scared the BEJESUS out of people- so these ones can crawl, cut, shred, hover, leap, take up walls, snake their sucker claws around things and generally do a lot of damage. I like the idea that whenever they enguage the hover mode, their skirt has to break open and unfold a little- the idea being it takes up a heap of energy to do.
I disliked the Dalek design from that American pilot book- I wanted something that was instantly recognisable as Dalek.
I am based in Sydney Australia, now, and happy to poke whinging students whenever they would like.

I really like the last one...
By the way, I would also love to hear how much time you spent on these.
