Hey guys!
Hope you're having a great summer!
Thought I'd show you something I've been working on when the weather hasn't been great.
It's a sniper rifle heavily inspired by the one in UT3 which I'm sure many of you will notice, but I'm still trying to add some own ideas to it.
The high poly is far from done still. Got a lot of refining to do as well as many details left to add, but I hope you like what I've done so far!

however, theres some "mistakes" in in the design i´d say.
being a gun nut myself i might see it from a bit too "realistic" point of view, but i think it might help making it appear more plausible.
first of the grip. how do you hold that thing? as its WIP, what did you plan (if theres no grip made yet).
the whole area around the ring looks way too fragile for a sniper rifle.
if you look at todays sniper rifles, most of them have the thickest mass in the grip, stock area.
so if your rifle would fire, the stock would most definately snap.
ok it might be a complete recoil free rifle, and the rifle made of some super hard metal alloy.
second would be the cocking handle, admitting it might work with the missaligned barrel, but its definately a logic gap i´d say.
usually the cocking handle feeds the round into the chamber, which is onthe same level as the barrel itself.
thats not the fact with yours.
it might work with some fancy mechanics or electricity but, then again why a cocking handle if its a future gun? :P
another problem that derives from the cocking handle thing, is the mag.
uhm. how does it feed??
i know it doesnt really matter, but it would make it a bit more plausible
the model itself is nice and looks clean.
wire?
cheers
The mechanics is something that I've more or less taken straight from the UT3 design. But I totally agree with you that it's impractical, however, I think I'm sticking to it to be honest. Can't be bothered coming up with a new design and remodel so much of it.
Thanks a lot for the advanced crits I got, I appreciate it!
It's fed from the clip. The bolt slide is for cleaning...
Might want to rethink the padding in some areas.
Hope you like it!
Hahahah, actually I don't think so!
Thanks man!!
i would say maybe up the spec a little to show off your high poly a little more...its hard to read all the details you put into it
Uhm, a hand? =o
I guess I could do that, but I don't think I'll do that until I'm more or less done with the rifle.
Thanks for the comments!
but i hate the circular hole
Scope curl? You mean the twist where you look?
Too bad.. =/ Not much I can do about it now.
Ah yes, that's the lack of perspective I get when I render in Zbrush. >.<
Thanks a bunch!
The bolt action, magazine, and barrel placement do not make sense in relation to each other, at all, which makes it rather confusing to look at.
The circular grip doesn't look functional at all - if you cut into the stock where it connects to the ring on top so the part of the ring where the trigger was could function more as a grip you could get your hand around, it would make more sense and read a lot better.
I think the wires on the scope are kinda neat, but it doesn't make sense where it connects on the eye-piece - its plugging into the cup instead of the lens, which is odd looking.
I also wonder what you'll do with it in zbrush.
Also, not sure if you figured this out already, but pressing "p" in zbrush turns on perspective
edit: sorry if that sounded harsh was half cut last night ;P
Got any ideas on what I should change, other than the grip?
You're right.. Was thinking about that this morning as well.
Gonna tweak that area and then start working on the lowpoly.
Thanks for the comments.
then again the round grip makes the gun look pretty flimsy, so I could be wrong.
You want a wire of the highpoly? Uhm, sure! As soon as I'm done with it!
It's not a single mesh, no. Much of it started out as one mesh, but then I separated them from eachother to make the model more managable.
Thanks for the comments!
I'd pick it up and shoot some heads in an FPS for sure!
HEAD SHOT!

I also think you could take out the contrast on texture a bit
the wear and tear doesnt appear too well thought about.
if you look at used weapons of today, you´ll notice that abbrasion (and friends) only occur in very exposed places.
personally i wouldnt add rust to it, you wouldnt want to fire a weapon that is rusty, unless you have suicidal tendencies..
alright, maybe a bit of rust? I was meaning in the edges, not over all
Be sure to study the materials too , think where it needs damage, why its there etc
Thank you!
I also realized that I'll need to redo some of the lowpoly and rework the texture because of that.
Inexperienced as I am with FPV weapons I didn't model from the FPV, and because of that I missed out on a lot of details in the most crucial area.
I'll do my best, and post again when I'm done with that.
also, if it's a single shot rifle (looking at the bolt), then the magazine needs to be a lot further back, as the bolt is about 2" behind where the bullets should sit in the barrel.
I'll post the updated highpoly in a few hours. It's already looking a lot better. At least that's what my classmate, c0ldhands, told me. ^^
What do you think so far?
