I see a lot of very nice portfolio sites with their models rendered in a really clean way. What do you usually do when you render a model for a 2D portfolio image?
Also I'm getting transparency sorting issues with my model.

3dsmax? Maya?
Sky light, AO, and or 3 point lighting.

What Vig said. And in 3DS Max, don't forget to change the rendering from Area to Catmull. If you don't know how:

Or - don't bother and simply screengrab! Nvidia cards also let you set anti aliasing. And most apps have a least realtime shadows now.
