Can anyone hook me up with some good grid maps? I know there are a ton lurking around here on these forums but I've been searching for the past hour with no luck.
Most of them are pretty useless, way too much contrast - too exhausting when working longer on mapping stuff, most of them don’t show the actual pixel size which is quite important. But heh, ive come to the point where i use the max standard unwrap checker just because im too lazy to throw a better checker on the model

I used this one for a good long while, until I made my own. Mines highly personalized and makes me laugh every time I see it. It also does exactly what I need it to do.
If you load the checkerboard pattern into an empty slot in a blank file and save that file as maxstart.max to your /scenes/ folder it will load every time you start up 3dsmax. If you use the Onion Layer Manager it allows you to toggle between two textures with a click. Great way to keep your checkerboard handy and swap it out.
Having a custom checker pattern also allows you to turn on pixel snap. The procedural default checker pattern doesn't work with pixel snap as its procedural.
MoP also found a handy little way for it to load the first material instead of the default checker every time. http://boards.polycount.net/showthread.php?t=52283
I haven't tested the edited 2008 UV macro in 2009 yet, but the same edits should hold up if the UV macro changed.
Also check out MoP's Normalize script, great stuff. It was a bit buggy in the begining but he was great about fixing it up. It's been solid for me for the last few months. http://boards.polycount.net/showthread.php?t=52415
I use this one all the time. I absolutely love it, the circles make it easy to notice slight squashes, the text/colors let me know exactly where on the map I'm looking at and if it's mirrored, and the individual pixels make it easy to tell just how good the map is going to look.

tell me about it, I ended up making one myself, anyway. Pyromania, you're a champ.
I guess this thread is useful for people looking for the same thing, so I guess it's not a complete loss.
