Silly question about applying for job positions

Well maybe silly, but is it ok to shoot off an email with a link to a demoreel/portfolio and attached resume if the company doesnt have a listing for the position you want to apply for? I get that theres a low chance of getting a response but it wouldnt be rude or would it?

I've seen at least three similar posts been put up in the last week or so...the search function on the forums would help get the answers you want by finding existing threads with replies on them...
