So my project is finally wrapping up and I'm planning on taking a month or 2 off - preferably someplace (or someplaces) cool. The one caveat is that it can't be a really trendy place like Paris or Barcelona or Rome or whatever. So I've been asking people I know and have gotten recommendations for Argentina, Trinidad, Thailand, New Zealand and a bunch of other places. I've been thinking about possibly hitting up the Scandinavian countries starting with Iceland but hear that they are very expensive due to America's awesome dollar. Is that true?

But what about everyone here? This is a very worldly community and a bunch of you do the travel thing (like Gauss for example). So where does everybody recommend?

I'm not really sure what you mean that it can't be a "trendy place," like can you not go to Europe at all? If you're just talking about the major cities, I would definitely recommend doing a round-trip tour of Europe, although I'm biased because I love castles :P

Scandinavia is great, but it is pretty dang expensive for Americans, especially nowadays.

I know this is heresy, but I went to New Zealand and didn't fall in love. Everywhere I went just felt really touristy... it just felt like the only things to do there were "adventure sports" like Zorbing and black water rafting, which are cool, but after paying something like $80 for Zorbing for about 15 seconds I kinda questioned the worth of it. I guess overall I felt like New Zealand is such a "new" country it didn't have very interesting history for me, at least.

A friend of mine recently took a several month tour of Southeast Asia and said it was awesome, and that's something I'm looking to do at some point.

It really boils down to what you're wanting to do. Are you wanting to really relax on your vacation, or do you want to see a lot of places; are you interested in history? Personally I think there's something beautiful to find in most parts of the world, so it's really more about what you're wanting to do when you get there :)

Maybe it would be good if you say what you want to do. Party, experience nature, culture? Wanna go skiing?

Imo, anywhere outside your living room would be ideal.

Ask Poop and see if there are cheaper ways to get to Iceland.

    Ever been to Iowa?

Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia would be my first picks.

    Cabin in the mountains!

I went with some friends a couple years back and can't wait to go again! :) There was a skunk at the front door about 2-3 in the morning. I went to the door, looked through the stained glass, and barely saw this little animal with a white streak going down its back. It heard me, "fumigated" the front door and ran. Wow, that sure did stink up the den in that cabin. Thankfully it was a 4 story cabin! :)

Well i've been all over the damn world and if I could go back to any place it would be Australia. I had a blast there. Plus you could skip over to New Zealand while in Sydney for not too too much extra.

The Seychelle Islands are awesome but rather pricey to get there.

    Hawaii is nice too.

Just go some where new and enjoy your stay.

You should come to Brazil, not Argentina. Brazil has amazing and cheap beaches to go, true paradises. I´ve been in some, and its amazing!

    Here´s a tourist island in Brazil - http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=fernando+de+noronha

My last vacation, a few years back, was to Wales. I spent 2 weeks in an old cabin. Spent my days traveling old castles and mines, going hiking on mountains. Spent my nights drinking at the pub just down the road, looking up at the flawless sky and actually seeing the milky way for the first time. So that's my recommendation, Wales. :)

If you want a cheap, cool(as in cold), not so trendy and cultural vacation, go to Prague! You can get a 3-course diner with 1 litre of beer and a coffee for 10 euro. Then again, 10 euro is about 15,50$ I dont know if thats considered cheap in the US but it is in Europe(you usually pay about 30 euro for the above elsewhere in Europe)

3 courses + beer + coffee would go for around $40 here, so 10 Euros is a steal :)

My personal preference is someplace cold. If you really want to get away from shit, go to Alaska. One of the last true wilderness' in the states. Anchorage has 90% of Alaska's population, so if you want it to be quiet....go anywhere but there :)

For a lot of locations in Europe...if you really wanna cut air costs down...take a 3rd party airline too if you want...the only pitfalls are that you bring less stuff on board + wait an additional few hours.
