3ds max low poly to high poly

Hi
I'm sort of new to 3ds max and I was wondering what the various tools/ways someone would go about making their low poly object into a higher poly object? I have been reading a couple of the posts about the process for making an environment and almost all of them start out low poly then they say they make them higher.

Thanks

    heard of subdevision modeling before?

in most cases you begin with a rough model,- add some loop (with split loops for example) till you have a base mesh.

then with that base mesh apply a subdevision wich is a method that subdevides the mesh into more quads while smoothing the result.

The very same happens with all the zBrush modeling or other common sculpting tools out there (blender, mudbox,...) they subdevide and let you add more and more little details.

here is another illustration of how subdevision behaves:

read up some threads or tutorials on this
    a good resource imo is:
