web hosting switch? (suggestions)

so, as of yesterday, all my emails in my mailbox account through 1and1.com has been completely erased somehow. I'm not a happy camper at all right about now. tech support pretty much told me i'm fucked. -great support eh?
. . .anyways.

now i'm looking into switching web hosting providers. anyone have a good suggestion?
-i'm looking at something cheap for my portfolio
- an easy process/program to upload my content onto my website

-anyone know of a good place to find information about switching hosts? i have a lot more questions that i don't need to mash into a silly forum post. - thanks

-oh and i hate 1and1.com just to point that out.

(2) I never use my email accounts anyway, just use Gmail, Yahoo, etc.

I use Memset.
Linux based apache servers so you need to add the HTML and then upload the files using a secure FTP program (WinSCP for example), but been using them for 4+ years now and no complaints

Try Hole in the Wall, they've been pretty good to me. For $10 a year they're pretty nice. You'll have to get your own domain, obviously, but that shouldn't be a problem.

Dreamhost support was usually fast to help, but the site I had for a while with them was normally slow to the point it was not functional and I couldn't even work in it sometimes. Same thing with another acquaintance that has a website with them, timeout errors, barely loading a lot of times, and both situations there was not that much traffic.

Been using Dreamhost for more than three years, and for 'regular' sites I highly recommend it. DL speeds are sufficient for most purposes. However, it is not good for running CPU-intensive stuff, such as a forum or Wiki (unless they are very lightweight- no MediaWiki or VBulletin without slowing to a crawl with any sort of traffic).

thanks for all the replies. . . its now day 4 and my emails are still gone. and i'm still pissed. there isn't a way to auto forward either which is kinda shitty.

-can i set it up to recieve emails through outlook or something instead of a web based application? i think i'll ask the tech guy at work tomarrow.

Yeah, you enter your mail servers, username and password into outlook or whatever client,
the server is usually mail.yourwebsite.com, but if the site is down you can't check your mail anyway.
